Monks Monastery Wards Magic Religion Anyone Remember?

Hello, I cannot remember the series of the books that was about monks essentially hiding their magical powers from the church hierarchy. They employed a set of "wards" (small cubes) to set up magical workspace. Anyone remember the author or any of the book titles in the series?

It sounds familiar but I don't get any specific books coming to mind. Any other details? names? Places? Type of religion? Were they evil monks?

The cubes used as wards make me think of the Deryni books. Some of the characters in the series are monks or priests.
