space race, two minds, one body

From the 70s, or early 80s. The hero wakes up to find himself in a spaceship at the start of a race, with an "alien" in his head.
The description of the space race part went into detail about acceleration and fuel and deceleration , none of this "hyperspace and arriving with no momentum".
The race then continued on a planet, but my memory is a getting fuzzy here. The sub-plot was about the improving relationship between the two personalities sharing this body.

Thanks for the idea; I checked the plot summary but I think it is different. The main plot I remember was the race, with other ships/teams, the aim being to get to the planet first to get an advantage in that second half of the race.
