(Found) Author and Title of book

As a kid I read a short story about a wimpy kid who lived in this village and they had a field with dragon eggs in it. The other kids would pick on this kid and on the day that the eggs where to hatch the kids beat up the kid rather badly so he could barely make it to the hatching. At the hatching the dragons would choose a child as their partner and the child would raise them. The kid does end up with a dragon that is I think the last one to hatch and is weak in the end they both hobble off.

I think it is part of like the Pern series or by the same author mainly want to know who wrote it and if there is more to in then just a short story? Thank you.

I don't know the story itself, but the Pern series was written by Anne McCaffrey.

The story is "The smallest dragonboy", and it is apparently in a collection called "A gift of dragons", which I haven't read, so it must be in another collection, too.

I don't think there is anything wrong with bronze Heth; and I can't remember having encountered Keevan (or, presumably, K'van) in later books; just a camio appearance, apparently.

Ah, got it. It was in "Get off the unicorn".
