It was good, but i liked some other books better.
Spoiler from here on out.

I kept wandering, who the Malazans where gonna face. The possible enemies kept dissapearing, kept being taken care of by others.

The gathering of Gods was big, but not as big as i thought it would have been. I'm still not entirely sure wether Cotillion and Shadowthrone just killed the Crippled God, or killed him and in doing so absorbed some of his power, or set him free from the 'mortal' husk that was created for him.

Fiddler's ending is awesome.

Btw, any1 knows who nefarias Bredd was?
Tayschrenn?

Picked this up on the 21st and decided that I wasn't going to read it until I finished the 3 books I was currently reading. I cracked yesterday although I did finish two of them but David Durham's has been put aside and I'm now about 200 pages in....

Eye-bleedingly major Spoilers ahead in white. Do NOT read before finishing the book.

I was quite confused by what happened to Kaminsod in the end, but having thought about it, he was "set free" by being killed... the reason he had to be defended in the first place was that while he was still in chains, death would have been just that, but once he was free, and could establish a connection to all his worshippers in their Jolly Jade Giants, death allowed him to go back there.

Stunned, awestruck, blown away, words don't sum it up. When I first joined this forum just under 6 years ago, there was several recommendations flying around to read Stephen Erikson's Malazan book of the Fallen. Thought I'll give it a go.
From Ganoes Paran as a young boy meeting Whiskeyjack, Surly and Fiddler on a balcony, Whiskeyjack telling him not to become a soldier right through to the fisherman in Malaz City talking to another young boy who wants to grow up and become a soldier. I've savoured every word.

Who's Nefarias Bredd, a bad loaf of bread, that helped save a couple of sappers. Ask Sergeant Tarr:D

One itty bitty complaint. I wanted Antsy, Blend, Picker and Spindle to be there at the end.

I finished it a couple of nights ago - I must admit that I choked up a couple of times at the end.

I'm going to assume the anyone who's made it this far down the thread has read the book (or, at least, has seen the warnings for spoilers) so I'm not going to blank these out:

- I expected Tayschrenn to appear at some point! I can't quite remember what happened to him in Stonewielder, but I guess he now belongs solely to the realm of ICE.

- On the subject of ICE, I guess that at least his next book, if not two, or all three, deals with something before/during TCG. For example, I remember Skinner stealing something important to do with Old Fally at the end of Stonewielder, yet the only mention of him in TCG was that he had gone rogue.

- I was very disappointed with Mappo's end. He was a good character, but his role has really petered out and become more of a footnote since the first half of the series (and what exactly happened with Ardata? After she healed him in HoC, I think it was, I've been expecting things from her, but she's not even featured properly...).

- Karsa's role, I assume, will be explained in ICE's Darujhistan book.

- It was wonderful to see Paran and Kalam again, after huge absences, and it was particularly nice to see Tavore and Paran re-united at the end, though I can't quite guess how much both of them know of Felisin's demise.

- Quick Ben, the cheeky devil... I don't know about you guys, but I still have little to no idea about him! My guess is he'll return to the Empire and we'll see him in an ICE book (along with cameos from the remaining Bonehunters).

- Did I miss something about Grub? He's still a mystery to me.

- Did Seren manage to lead Udinaas and the Imass to a safe place?

- Apsalar and Crokus meeting again was disappointing as I'd hoped to see more of Apsalar. I guess I've forgotten something from a previous book about that.

- I've got a vague idea who Edgewalker is, but nothing past what Silcahs Ruin's conversation with Tulas Shorn seemed to imply.

Argh. When you really think about it, the loose ends come thick and fast. I suppose one can only hope that ICE deals with them - whilst a lot aren't directly involved with the Empire, I can see them entering in at some point or other, even if it is simply as part of Shadowthrone and Cotillion's schemes.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed the book and I loved the series. I honestly doubt that I'll ever read anything quite like it in my lifetime. Which reminds me that I'm all set for an entire read-through, now, accompanied by totally re-evaluated positions on characters like The Crippled God.

But do I read it chronologically, or in order of publication? Choices!

Oh, and I think I ought to mention that my prediction from a few years back of everything being linked, somehow, to the moon didn't come to pass. :p

---

EDIT: And that's another thing - Felash's maid being a Seguleh, and one that talks! I couldn't help but think that the fact that there were seven sisters (well, six) was of some importance. Probably me looking too deeply, though.

EDIT2: Can anyone remind me exactly what Quick Ben's vow to do with healing Burn was in GotM? I guess it was something to do with ridding her of TCG's poison, but I can't remember. Been niggling at me ever since he decided he'd take all the credit.

---

EDIT3: Last edit.

Favourite part of the entire book was the first three or four pages of Chapter 18. Four in the morning, and I think I might have woken at least one family member up with my "Squeee!": the return of Kalam. :D I've been waiting for that moment for years, even to the point of despair.

I was on the bus and think my YES got a few surprised glances:eek:

Immediately after i read the book i posted here,
I should've waited a couple of days, cause after things sink in, certain parts become much clearer.

Did I miss something about Grub? He's still a mystery to me
Isn't Grub 'born' from the thoughts of the (dying) soldiers during Coltaine's march. In some parts of the book they theorise some gods come into existance because we think of them as such. I'm guessing Grub while not quite a god, is something similar. A being come into existance by the thoughts of Malazan soldiers. Something close to ascendency.

Was Quick Ben's vow in GOTM? Can't remember anymore. In my head i got it, that he made that vow during Memories of ice, i guess my recollection is wrong.

It's been a long time since I read the book with the vow in, so I might be wrong. All I can remember is that he was underground with some kind of humanoid made out of earth, and they were all complaining about the poison.

Yeah, wasn't it in MoI with a barghast god acting as a twig upon his shoulder allowing him to acces his warrens without being atacked by the poision.

Yep, MoI: Chapter 2 (Malazan: Memories Of Ice).

My confusion comes from thinking that the whole Picker and the torcs thing comes from GotM. :p Thinking about it, that's just not logical - you can't expect a character like Picker to wear them for two and a half books!

Having finished TCG, I have to say I was very satisfied with the conclusion of the story. I think it was chapter 28 that was 90 pages of battle for the Spire. Erikson didn't hold anything back. The first thing I did when I finished was to check interviews to see if he has intentions to write much more in Malaz. Seems that we are in luck.

Favorite Parts
- The Jaghut warriors
- Nefarious Bredd
- Hedge's squad with their kittens
- Shake battle with the Tiste Liosan

Comments
-I was hoping to see more from Hood than just killing two Assail.
-I thought Edgewalker should have been involved considering his interest in Cotillion.
-Don't understand why Ubla was given special armour etc to be Icarum's companion.
-I missed or forgot all the references to Smile's bar. Supposedly it was the emperor's originally?

Lenny, as far as Grub is concerned I believe he came to be during the chain of dogs in a very similar way that Nefarious Bredd came to be when Fiddler needed him in TCG. There have been a few refrences suggesting he has a large role to play in the future of the empire.

I read that Erikson plans to take on Karsa Orlong's character himself after he finishes the next trilogy he's working on.

EDIT: And Stormwielder isn't availible to the US until May 10. Argh.

pre-order it at amazon.com,
i've read for some time now.

Almost halfway through now! Have met a few of my favourite characters, who have returned, including Kruppe which made me smile :)

Still as well written as his previous books.

SPOILERS AVAST!!!!!!!

Finally finished LATE the other night, fav parts were the shake and the spire battles (the letter from Tehol was ace). loved the little insights into the marines on the march and the crossing of the desert was so well done! can't believe blistig wasn't torn to bits, did he survive the end?

I did want more on the battle between the 'tiste' storm in defence of the otataral dragon (cant remember her name!) against all the rest of the elient, did they all survive?

The 'return' of the T'Lan Imass in the midst of battle was like damn! lol

nice little cameos from Kruppe and Temper (if thats his name, you know, the gardian of the house in Malaz City) and the Hellian part was a nice touch!

as mentioned above not sure why Ublala Pung got the Jag armour but perhaps it was just so he could smash sister calm's head in? I thought he was going to turn up at the spire and lead the other toblakia into battle!

I thought Mappo's arc was fitting ,he had lost faith and his mind and the revelation as to why he and others were chosen broke him, tragic but there was nowhere that story could go.

Theres so much more I could go on about, probably as good a book as MOI or DG IMO and a fitting end to the saga of the Fallen.
Can't wait for the next trilogy to start now :)

Oh! I almost forgot that the Errant got away!! I wonder if and when he'll get his comeuppence, keep an eye out for Draconus if I were him :)
