possible title prison planet

The story takes place on a planet with a very heavy gravity and no real metals but the prisoners on this planet plan an escape using ceramic guns and projectiles. I read this book along time ago and can't really remember the title for sure

I remember a little more, but have not been able to find this story.
The story is multi-generational and there were semi-intelligent creatures that they had to battle - only women, children, and old men were stranded.
One of the people went to the far north in a suicide mission to mine metals.
I think they were able to mine enough metals to make a radio beacon to call an enslaving ship to the planet
