Question About Submitting a Short Story

Hello, all. Apologies if this has been answered before.;)

I decided several weeks ago to try my hand at short stories and possibly flash fiction. My first story is nearly finished, and I think I'll be very happy with how it ends up. I plan to spend another few weeks tweaking it and making sure it's as good as I can possibly make it. No worries there.

My question is about where to submit it. More specifically, I'm wondering if anyone knows of maybe a list of publishers or magazines (along with their genre of choice) that would make the search easier for me. I've Googled things like "short story publishers" and "submitting a short story", etc., but all I get are individual sites which usually just comprise of simple contests. Definitely not what I'm looking for, and I'd rather not go site by site through thousands of possibilities if I don't have to.

Is there a website that has the kind of information I'm looking for, or maybe some kind of publication I can pick up somewhere? I live in the States, if that makes any difference.

Thanks much in advance!

There's also Duotrope.

Do you subscribe to, or read, any magazines - online or print? There are a large number of ones that publish short genre fiction, and it's best to read them to get an idea of the sort of stories they prefer to publish.

Not currently, but I'm looking for a few to check out and get some back issues to get see what they usually publish. And thanks for the links, guys. Both look extremely helpful!

Duotrope is an excellent one, it lists a ton of other site that are taking publishing.
