I remember reading a book in a school library at least 6 years ago about a boy who was trained or something by computers with no human contact, he was playing tennis with supposedly fake partners, then one girl tried to contact him, he was the only living person he knew (maybe) and they slept on beds which were something to do with sand, and she broke him out and they went for a ride in a car-like thing. Sorry, all I remember. I have another book which I can't remember from 70s-80s about a man who was a scientist who was dying of lung cancer, and he told his friend to do a study on him, and they replaced his lungs with artificial gills after he kind-of died, expecting them to just work for a few seconds and be rejected, but they worked, and the scientists built a research center, and flew him to the ocean in a tank on a plane, and he didn't want to be used, and he (I think) swam into an oil slick or something like that and died for real. Any help would be appreciated.

The second book is Richard Setlowe’s The Experiment (1980).

Goodreads review: “…it concern(s) a man (perhaps an MD, a surgeon, or a scientist) who is diagnosed with incurable lung cancer. He refuses to accept it and opts to take part in experimental surgery. His lungs will be replaced with fish gills. He will survive and live out his natural lifespan; but he must live the rest of his life immersed in water. The operation is a success but after a while of being studied and kept in tanks--he grows restless--he isn't having much fun--so he escapes into the ocean and becomes a man-fish; forcing himself to conquer all fears and become fully adapted to life in the sea.”
