Bad News for Stargate fans

It was announced yesterday that due to MGM's recent financial problems, the mooted Stargate movies for SG-1 and Atlantis, as well as the hope for an SGU movie, will not go ahead.

The statement is essentially a polite way of saying that the Stargate franchise is dead... at least for now. We can only hope that someone takes note of the fan reaction and enthusiasm for the franchise and brings it back.

GateWorld SGU continuation, other movies dead — for now

The SyFy networks basically spit on its fans.
To not end either Atlantis or Universe was SighFys way of emphatically saying they were no longer a scifi network and that it didn't care about its fans.

I for one have vowed to never rest until the jackals at SighFy are swept out in wave of righteous indignation.

TV viewers, at least in Britain, seem to be mailny interested in reality TV cooking programmes and the like. Normal hours TV seems to be going more and more in that direction. The better stuff comes on late night, but Stargate isn't really aimed at the late night market. Cable networks are constrained by viewer statistics and there's a lot of competition.

But it would be a pity to lose Stargate. There will be withdrawal symptoms. It's become an institution in this home, probably many others.

A movie? Well, will it put bums on seats? There's obviously a lot of competition there too -- in the movie sci-fi SFX market -- and Stargate is essentially a sort of tongue in cheek take-off on the original Star Trek series, which is currently running on TV here.

Sorry Tilk. Spock still rules ... :)

I was really disappointed by this, as I (even though i prefer fantasy) really enjoy Stargate and was really enthralled with stargate Universe. (Despite the criticisms, I like it) I hope that someday, the series will be continued.

That may be true, but the later Seasons of Stargate have never been shown on the UK terrestrial channels - BBC1, ITV, BBC2 or C4. When Virgin pulled the plug on Sky just before the final episode of Stargate SG-1 was to air, I pulled the plug on Virgin. I have no interest now in paying for Sky or Virgin and lining the pockets of Rupert Murdoch and the like, when you can by boxed sets of DVDs so cheaply. And did I really miss anything by not seeing the end of "Lost"? I have still never seen the final episode of Stargate, though I've seen a lot of Atlantis on another channel, and one thing this decision might mean is that the terrestrial channels might now show the whole of the franchise.

There may even be a Stargate 2, the squeal to the original movie...don't know how to react to that

Anyways the stargate we know and love isent dead while fan films and the audio books keep being made!

well this sucks. honestly i'd already given up hope of any new stargate after universe got the can. i don't like the idea of a sequel to the movie that makes everything that happened in SG-1, Atlantis and Universe null. if they think it is dead then leave it alone.
