(Probably Found) Fiction series

There was this book series I read in middle school and I loved it but I dont remember tons about it:
I remember the books had something to do with dreams and there was a machine that people went into to dream. and people sometimes got so dependent on these machines that they had to be hooked up with tubes and force fed. I also remember there was this guy/"hero" and he in each book would travel to different worlds, i think dream worlds and would save the day!, Ill try to remember more but thats all I can remember for now

Not sure if it helps, but could this have been the novel where the protagonist is hired to bring a Chinese politician out of his dream world? He does so by recognising that the politician has provided a key in the shape of a tiger. The tiger is the 'second most powerful animal in China' and so the protagonist recognises a clue when he sees one and turns himself into a dragon (the first most powerful animal), defeats the tiger and wakes the dreamer. Might have been John Brunner
