After watching the 3rd episode, the absence of Ghost is becoming a concern for me. He has only appeared once so far, when Jon found him as a pup.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Ghost plays a very important role in Jon's life and I hope they don't downplay that (or worse, cut it out) in the HBO series.

I also noticed they cut out all of Catelyn's journey from Winterfell to King's Landing. (The storm at sea, etc...)

Overall I like the series so far; the casting is great, the acting and sets are superb, but it feels like something is missing.

The TV show versus reading the book is almost like watching the highlights of a championship sporting event as opposed to watching every minute of the game itself. The moment-by-moment intensity just isn't there. So much of the detail that went into the books is missing, and it feels like the show is missing its 'soul'.

I realized that they cut the whole boat trip out but TBH I didn't miss it..

I think Ghost will be in the next episode. Maybe they had trouble finding a large white dog that was well enough trained?

Yeah, I know that due to time restrictions they are going to have to eliminate some things entirely, and the journey at sea had no affect on the overall story so it was probably right to cut it, but I really expected to see at least a glimpse of Ghost in many of Jon's scenes. Maybe his first appearance is being saved for dramatic effect?

that may very well be the case

Ghost is out hunting. I'm sure he'll be back soon.
You have to keep a growing direworlf fed, ya know.

YES! I have noticed it big time. I believe Ghost was always with Jon and I remembered last night he was with him when he first met the Imp, also Ghost didnt like him so much BUT when he meets Sam he likes him.

Yes Catelyn seemed to appear at Kings Landing too soon, but knowing what we know I don't think a 20 hour series would be enough.

I agree with your assessment of sporting event highlights, but what can we do?
I am very happy with the series and am sure to continue that way. I make a few quibbles but its a great adaptation.:D

This explanation may help:

One thing we should address: many, many questions about where Ghost was in this episode. Truth be told, the actors and production have made it clear that they learned just how hard animals can be to work with, and it seems like having them in all the scenes they wanted them to be present in proved prohibitive. Never fear, however. Next episode, Ghost is back, and he shows some teeth!

The fact that they are hard to deal with could be part of it, I hope they can start adding him more however (CGI or otherwise)

I also think that maybe they feel viewers will wonder why they let a Wolf walk around with Jon. They could be waiting until, (Spoiler) the thing with The old Bear so he (Bear) can decree that Ghost can go anywhere in the castle...

I will gouge out my eyeballs if they incorporate CGI for the wolves.

IMO you may have to start gouging. These are going to be humongously large direwolves. Even the biggest dog that resembles a wolf would look small next to a full grown direwolf. Given how easily CGI is done these days, and how well it's done, I wouldn't gouge both out :) Leave one to watch the series with.

I realize that dogs don't come super sized in the real world, but I'd much rather they have smaller real dogs than huge CGI ones.

CGI has it's place, but I hate it if it's not needed.

I miss really, really good puppets (for lack of a better term).

Hold on, I have to shake my cane at the neighborhood kids.

Sorry it took a while to respond. I was busy yelling at parking meters and lawn signs.

CGI has its' place IMO. I'm thinking the kind of CGI used when doing Gollum in LOTR, although doing that would be far more problematic with dogs. I think it would be possible though. Any way you look at it, they showed the size of the dead mother, as they should have. It would be pretty weak to have the full grown pups all be the size of an Alaskan Malamute

The problem with CGI is it's only defense is Gollum in LoTR. :)

That was amazing.

This won't be. CGI for tv shows never is. Even well made tv shows.

It'll be fine in the end, just had to get my gripe in.

That's the worst part about HBO, no commercials makes me wish I had a TV in my bathroom. Or a toilet in my living room, I guess.

Get a DVR and save on the plumber. A toilet in your living room sounds expensive. Getting one completely changed the way I watch television.

here's a pic of Ghost
