I wrote this for my wife, who has amazed me by not "dropping out" yet, although I don't expect her to finish the season, given that fantasy is not her thing, and she gets upset by violence, cruelty, etc. It's fairly amazing that she's lasted through 3 episodes. Anyway, I thought that some might find this useful. I, or someone else, can add to it as more characters are introduced.

Eddard "Ned" Stark- Head of House Stark, Lord of Winterfell, his family's ancestral castle. He is Wardern of the North, which is sort of a chief lieutenant who is in charge of many important military and civil matters in that geographic location. There is also a Warden of the South, East and West. Ned is the closest ally and long time friend of King Robert Baratheon, and in the first episode is asked by Robert to be the new Hand of the King (chief advisor, go to guy, the person who actually does most of the ruling while the King gets to play. Different Kings might rely on the Hand more or less, depending on how lazy they are. Robery likes to drink, chase women and hunt, so he relies on the Hand a lot. Ned joined with Robert 17 years before in a successful rebellion against Aerys Targaryen, who was known as the Mad King (mad as in insane). Ned has two daughters, Sansa and Arya, three sons, Robb, Bran and Rickon, and one *******, Jon Snow.

Catelyn Stark- wife of Ned, mother of Robb, Bran, Rickon, Sansa and Arya. She hates and resents Jon Snow for being Ned's *******. She is of House Tully. Her sister is Lysa Arryn, now the widow of the previous Hand of the King, Jon Arryn. She recieves a note from her sister which says that Jon Arryn was murdered and din't die of natural causes. Catelyn rushes to King's Landing (where Ned, the King and the rest of the royal pary of have returned to. King's Landing is a large city south of Winterfell where the King rules from. Catelyn is able to hold off the assasin sent to kill bran long enough so that bran's direwolf can rip the man's throat out.

Robert Baratheon- King of "the seven kingdoms". Older brother of Renly, who sits on the "small council", a group of advisors to the King, presided over by the Hand. Robert has gotten fat and lazy. He used to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, warriors in Westeros (Westeros is the continent the seven kingdoms occupy). He has three children- Joffrey, who is ther oldest, Myrcella, and Tommen. Robert is quick to anger and laughs easily.

Cersei Lannister- Robert's wife, of the very powerful House Lannister. She has two brothers- the very powerful, charismatic and attractive Jaime, and the not so poweful, charismatic of attractive Tyrion, who is also a dwarf. Cersei. Is clearly cruel, narcisistic, and is having an incestuous reltaionship with her brother Jaime. She pretty much hates everyone who isn't her bother Jaime or child. Hers was an arranged marriage, as most marriages among noble families in Westeros are.

Jaime Lannister- A great warrior. He was a member of Aerys Targaryen's King's Guard, a group of seven Kinights that are sworn to protect the King, that being their main function. He killed Aerys Targareon by driving his sowrd through his back when it was clear that the rebellion was going to succeed. He is now a member of Robert's king's Guard. He throws Bran out of a tower window after bran sees him and Cersei engage in lovemaking.

Tyrion Lannister- younger brother of Jaime and Cersei. He is very bright and very witty. He used the services of whores liberally, loves to drink, and is the only one who really disciplines Joffrey (the Prince). It was reported that he owned the dagger (made of dragon bone and valyrian steel) that was used in the failed attempt to kill Bran when he was in a coma. Tyrion accompanies Jon Snow on his journey to the Wall

Viserys Targaryen- the only surviving son of the Mad king Aerys. he is in exile in Esteros, which is the continent that holds the "free cities'. It is accros the "narrow sea" due east of ki9ng's landing. We first see Viserys in the process of selling his sister Daenerys to Khal Drogo, the strongest of the Dothraki warlords. She is to be his wife. The deal is brokered by the very rich Magister Illyrio, of Pentos. Danerys and Viserys having been guests at his residence. Viserys is cruel. He expects Khal Drogo to help him get his cwon back in exchange for his sister. He has a coonfrontation with Deanerys about when he will be getting his cwon, and he is forced to back off by one of her Dothraki "bodyguards' and is forced to walk. Viserys may be in the beginnings of insanity, something that runs in the Targaryen family becuase of their inbreeding to keep their bloodline pure.

Deanerys Targaryen- Younger sister of Viserys. She was 14 in the book, she is 17 in the series. They felt that sex scenes with a 14 year old wouldn't go over well. She is treated pretty much as a slave by her brother, as a piece of property. She's very afraid of angering her brother, he uses "wake the dragon" as a euphimism for angering him.

Joffrey Baratheon- oldest son of Robert and Cersei. Betrothed to Sansa Stark. Joffrey can already be seen as cruel, cowardly and a miserble little sh*t. He lies about the incident with the buthcer's boy.
Sandor Clegane- also known as "The hound". Wears a helm that looks like a dog's head. The right side of his faced is badly scarred. he is joffrey's personal bodyguard.

Jon Snow- Ned's ******* son. Ned tells King Robert his mother's name was Wylla. Jon decides to join the Night's Watch rather than stay in Winterfell, where he is loved by everyone but Catelyn. He goes north to the Wall with his Uncle Benjin. The Wall is a massive 700 foot high 460 mile wide structure that acts as a barrier between the things in the North- wildlings, Others, and the South. It is manned by the night's Watch, which is made up of volunteers, some of which are not very willing. Any given man may have been given the choice of say, castration or serving there (if they were a rapist) or losing a hand or serving there if they were a thief. The penalty for desertion is death.

Sansa Stark- betrothed to Prince joffrey. Loves girly stuff. Her direwolf is killed in place of Arya's.

Arya Stark- Sansa's younger sister. Total tomboy. Recieves a sword from Jon Snow that she names Needles. She makes her dierwolf run away, knowing it will be killed, after the i9ncident with Joffrey and micah, the butcher's boy. Arya is very close to jon and doesn't care much for Sansa.
Robb Stark- oldest son of ned and Cate. Acts as lord of Winterfell when his mother goes south.

Bran Stark- thrown from a tower window by Jaime Lannister. Was a very good climber before he "fell" ( it is not known that Jaime threw him). He has woken from his coma, but doesn't remember events that happened before he was thrown.

Rickon Stark- Ned and Cat's youngest son

Jorah Mormont- self exiled head of house Mormont, which is part of the North. He explains that he was trying to sell two poachers to slavers, Ned Stark found out and was on his way to dispense justice, so he ran for his life to the free cities. He gets up and leaves the "room" abruptly when he hears the news that Daenrys is carrying Khal Drogo's child.

Petyr Baelish- He is the "master of coin" and a member of the King's small council. He is of a minor noble family. He was in love with Catelyn and dueled Ned's brother brandon for her hand. He lost. He owns many brothels, and is clearly very intelligent and manipultive. His nickname is Littlefinger, and you may often hear him called that.

Varys- also member of the small council. he is the "master of whisperers"

Renly Bratheon- Younger brother of King Robert. Memeber of the small council.

Theon Greyjoy- of House Greyjoy He was taken as Ned Starks "ward" to ensure his father's good behavior after Robert's rebellion.

The Direwolves- the wolf pups were found near the start of episode one. There was one found for eac of the Stark children, and then a white one found a minute later that would go to jon Snow. By the way, Snow is the last name given to all bastards born in the North. There are other ******* names in other regions. Bran's wolf rips the throat of the assasin sent to kill him. We haven't seen as much of the wolves as was orginally intended or is in the books because the dogs playing them have been a bit "unruly" on the various ets. They will still be part of the story. Nymeria, was Arya's wolf. She was chases away to save her life. Lady , Sansa's wolf, was kiilled in Nymeria's place. Bran wakes from his coma at the instant Lady is killed, establishing a connection between the children and the wolves. Jon's wolf is named Ghost and does accompany him to the Wall.

Syrio Forel- hired by Ned Stark to teach Arya how to use her sword. He was the first swrod to the Sea lord of Braavos, which is another of the free cities across the Narrow Sea.

Maester Luwin- Maesters are best described as a combination of healer and scholar. Luwin is the Measter that is "assigned" to Winterfell. He was the older man with no facial hair who was entered Ned and Cat's bedroom

Grandmaster Pycelle- a member of the King's small council, and the maester assigned to king's Landing. For fans of the audiobooks, he is played by Roy Dotrice, who reads books 1, 2 and 3.

Ser Barristan Selmy- In GOT, knights are called Ser, not Ser. It means the same thing. Selmy is the oldest member of the King's Guard, and was the one talking to king Robert about their first kills (the scene where Jaime walks in).

Old Nan- the very old woman who was telling Bran the ominous story about winter coming. The actress who played her died in real life after shooting was done.

Vayon Poole- The Steward of Winterfell. Accompanied Ned to king's Landing.
Ser Rodrick Cassel- The Master of Arms of Winterfell. He was the older kan who accompanied Catelyn to King's Landing. he has the long whiskers that are tied under his chin

Ser Jeor Mormont- Jorah's father. Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. He was the man talking to Tyrion when jon was fighting the succession of recruits and beating them all.

Ser Alliser Thorne- Master of Arms at Castle Black, Night's Watch. He's the one commanding the recruits to go at jon when they are training.

Septa Mordane- She is the Septa of Winterfell, who acts as the "governess" of the Stark children. In our culture she might be a Nun. There is a male equivilant called Septon, which is like a Minister or Priest.

Measter Aemon- Maester at Castle Black (at the Wall).

Grenn, Pip- two of Jon's fellow "recruits" of the Night's Wacth.

Thanks for that. I don't have Sky, but may well buy the DVD when the series has finished, and it's a handy refresher ahead of A Dance With Dragons :)

Bravo Imp!
I may copy and paste this and send to a couple friends that have not read the books, and if my printer gets working again print for my wife.
Thank you ser.

Very welcome Ser :) When I have time later I'm going to adda bit about geography, customs, etc. I also sent that to a good friend who is new to the books and he found it helpful.

Imp, could you add Jory, please? I keep hearing his name but have no idea who he is!

Very sorry. I thought I had included him.

Jory Cassel goes south with Ned and becomes head of Ned's/The Stark Household Guard, responsible for the well being of the Stark Family, sort of a King's Guard, but with more responsibility.
