Hi all, I am trying to find the title of the following book:
The action is set on a train being pulled across a hyperspace or subspace landscape by mammoths. There are different coloured routes across the terrain. Planet fall is accomplished when the routes touch on worlds for short stretches. The mammoths have the ability to move from normal space onto the routes and can pull things in some sort of field with them. Hence the train.
The protagonist as a man who claims has has 'mastery of the blood', and it sounded like mental control of autonomic functions.
There was also a sub-plot involving a man and his daughter who had been exiled or escaped from their world when he started publicising that the travel route was moving off the planet and shortly it would become isolated.
