Looking for a fantasy novel/book published before 1986...

Obviously I cannot recall the author or title or I wouldn't be asking. I was reading this book when I was in middle school (1984-1986) and it just disappeared from the library one day. I can recall a map in the front of the book and the only feature that stands out from that map is an island or peninsula that may have been called the fingers or the hands... I also seem to recall a young man/boy character who was living in a village or hut that was on poles. He was a wizard maybe...? If anyone has any idea what I might be talking about I'd love a response. Too many years, too many head injuries.

Could this be the book? A Wizard of Earthsea It was first published in 1968, has maps which include a pair of islands called the Hands, the story starts out with the boy in a village (no poles though), and he becomes a wizard. It's a classic, many times reprinted, so just the sort of book you might find in a school library, though you might not recognize the cover because there are so many editions.
