4.01: Miracle Day - The New World

When death itself comes to a halt, the whole world faces its greatest danger yet. CIA agent Rex Matheson has only one clue - Torchwood.

NB: The episodes are aired in America six days before they are in the UK. Ep. 1 was shown on Starz on July 8th, and it will be shown on BBC One on July 14th.

Although Starz has this billed as S01E01, I'm going to list it as part of Series Four.

It's also worth noting that the US episodes contain content not seen in the UK episodes, and vice versa. Obviously, the UK episodes are longer, to fill the full hour (episodes on Starz are ~51 minutes long), so five or six minutes are cut for the American showing, but there are also scenes in the American episodes that are censored, or just don't appear, in the UK episodes. I'm planing on watching both sets of episodes, so if there's anything missing that adds to the story, or is of interest, I'll mention it.

From here, expect spoilers in this thread (and every other Miracle Day thread).

Torchwood is back! My first thoughts were how much improvement we see between series. Series Two was stronger than the first, Children of Earth was pretty incredible and now, with it's increased budget (explosions, car chases, helicopters packing heat! Also, American actors I recognise, which is no easy feat) and larger team of writers, the Miracle Day series is better still, and that's after only one episode!

The basic premise is that human death has been halted. Now we're not talking simply death from old age or disease - as the episode progresses, you may start thinking to yourself, "Well what about death by fire, or explosions? Heck, what if the body is in pieces?", and you won't be, er, disappointed (there's a particularly interesting scene where a Doctor is showing off the [living] charred corpse of a suicide bomber and removes the head).

As it's the first of ten, there's not much to be said other than one fantastically interesting plot point, which is bound to be integral to the story: everyone on the Earth is immortal... except Captain Jack.

We've got what appears to be an alien intervention, but we're not sure why. My [very early] guess is that everything has been reversed, simply so that whoever is doing this can get at Captain Jack. Why? We'll have to wait to find out (and I imagine, as it was with CoE, we won't see or hear from the aliens for a good number of episodes).

In conclusion: one episode down, and we're on to a winner! I look forward to watching the UK version on the 14th, and then episode two on the 15th.

Yes - I am all set to watch the UK version tonight - see how the US translation measures up. Must admit, I was a bit worried when Fox were taking over the series but I understand that a deal with Starz has been made when that fell through.

Looking forward to the episode anyway so had better log off soon!

Looks interesting - just about to watch the first episode tonight (UK)

There was a longish trailer at the end of ep. 1 too. Mekhi Phifer played a blinder, but otherwise I'd regard it as okay, just. The death of death is an interesting concept (wasn't it in a Discworld novel?) but the rest didn't grab me.

The first episode I liked as a set up for the series, but it struck me as, not exactly Americanised, but made for an American audience, very like Doctor Who: The TV Movie and I preferred Torchwood when it was Welsh.

As for the trailer (and most of the first episode) it seemed to be set mostly within the inside of various hospitals, and if I wanted to watch ER then I'd watch ER or Casualty or House.

Also the bad guys are always such bad shots. They could have least have shot Rhys in the garden and done us all a favour. But then, and I don't know why no one spotted this, but no one can die (except Jack) duh! So, what was the worry about the shooters in the helicopter anyway.

In the absence of any other British Sci-Fi I will carry on watching, but it isn't half as good as Luther, or last years Sherlock Holmes.

I don't think they would be worried about dying - just getting maimed or hideously burnt such as the decapitated body in the mortuary - who was still ALIVE!! - and continuing to live.

A good start to the series which looks like it will be a continuous story rather than discrete episodes of the previous seasons.

I'm starting to think there's something wrong with my thread...

Anyway, I've just watched the UK episode and, as far as I could tell, it was exactly the same (with the series trailer at the end).

Looking forward to episode two!

Seemed like a decent episode on first watching. And a surreal but worrying premise for a plot: which they didn't real start to grasp the impact of till they did the maths.

Not for kids though: when those pliers went "plink"...

Also the bad guys are always such bad shots.

Everyone with a gun, at times, not just the bad guys. It was a helicopter! How hard is it to hit a helicopter?!
