I thought you folks might read a lot of science fiction OR know someone that
can help. Here is my question.

I am looking for a book title with the following plot:
alien craft lands
burrows underground
military arrive build camp
the aliens can shut down engines with some kind of force field so they use
diesel engines
try to dig down to craft but it moves by melting rock
the military drill down to pen it in to a small area
military finally drive it partially to surface but can't get in
after time a robot similar to a spider gets out and moves around.
when the spiderrobot is confronted it folds up and freezes all around it.
one of the construction guys hits it with a bulldozer I think his name was
max
finally they get in after figuring out how to open it up, the top is a ball
with a tunnel through it that rotates giving access to a small area on the
other side.
the small area is a gateway to another galaxy I think??
