Your worst possible ending...

I'm in the middle of a re-read at the moment (and I have had wine so be warned lol) but I was wondering what would be everyone's worst endings for this series

For me it would be a balance thing - good versus evil, ie Ice vs Fire and a battle of old gods against new.

It seems the rise of the White walkers has set into motion an old prophecy of the Long Night and because of this Dragons are reborn and the magic of the lord of light is rekindled leading Melisandre to the wall for the final battle with the others

I really hope that GRRM has more in mind than uniting the land under one god and destroying the evil that is cold with that of heat and light, I'm hoping for a lot more twists and not a totally happy ending, but a few series have disappointed me lately with their endings (Mistborn, Dedepgate Codex) and if Fire and Ice does this I think I will be finished with fantasy. What would you dread happening?

What about you guys?

Erikson ending was good, so was Hobb's ending of the Farseer trilogy (I liked the fool's poem; that last dance of chances). I also liked Bakker's ending in the thousandfold thought.
That said most fantasy stories end like tripe. And that's okay.
Cause it is usually impossible to provide a truly satisfying ending to these type of books. The story that gets you to the ending is what matters.
I mean look at the Tolkien. Most if not all of the main characters survive and live somewhat happily ever after. Boring and cliché. But the books still remain great reads.

I'm just expecting a little bit more from this one, happily ever after just won't work after the roller coaster he's put us through

I'm not convinced that "Ice" is the evil half.

I never thought of this before, but Ned's sword being used to form two weapons is certainly symbolic of his House being torn apart. The sword was Ice. It was destroyed by fire. The Old gods are from the North, from the cold. Maybe there's more than meets the eye regarding The Others. i've always thought that it would be a unification of ice and fire, rather than one side winning. I'm rambling and have no time to turn this into a coherent post.

I actually always thought of Ice being good.

Starks, The Wall, Ice, Old Gods, etc.

The white walkers seem to be the threat the Wall, Knights Watch, the Starks are all guarding against this ancient foe rising again, even though they have forgotten what it is they are fighting.. it could be they have it wrong and it's actually the lord of light that is the ultimate evil but it got twisted somehow and Mellisandre wanting to fight the others is actually her manipulating the situation.

I've just got past the part where Sam is told Craster sons are coming for them, ie the babes he left out for his white gods have grown into wights

The Dragons seems to be waking in response to the threat from the Others and old magics are returning to the world.

Maybe Sam will uncover something in his Maesters training that will go against this and show the threat is something else but unless this happens it seems at the moment the white walkers are the real threat to mankind?

Meh I'm not very coherent atm either - not sure what I am trying to say lol

I love LOST for a lot of reasons, but I hate the fact that it took the name Others.

I have absolutely no good reason why I think of Ice as benevolent, or that the Others aren't connected to it.

Opposites attract and there is good and bad in everything/body...
But just maybe there is a third, fourth or at least a fifth force out there, besides the truth, that is truly eBil.

I repeat eBil!

And needs to be eradicated by all other forces including those of Ice and Fire.
May the Force be with You.

Perepupupupuuuuuupuuuuuuuu !!!
Go forth and multiple my stout warriors and henchmen.
From this day forth until the end we shall be a band, not of brothers but of musicplayers.
For in music we find unity and salvation, may the whole of Westeros and beyond dance and sing upon the tunes of the BEAR AND THE MAIDEN (F/H)AIR !

Pass me a glass of whatever you are drinking KiwiBird ;) my wine hath gone dry

I too have wondered if the Ice part isn't necessarily evil, but I don't have any proof really except that 1) GRRM is the master of creating characters in shades of grey, and things are rarely black and white in his world, and 2) if Ice is evil, shouldn't Fire be good? Is Fire the Dragons/Targs, or is it R'hllor? Cos I'm far from convinced that Mel's fire god is a good guy.

I think we need to know the purpose for the walkers to determine what shade of grey they are, was there a balance between them and the children before the first men destroyed the children leaving the walkers free to roam, the children used obsidian weapons that harm the Others.. maybe its mankind that are the bad guys they killed/drove away the main threat to the Others

We need more info lol looking forward to the next book

I think both Ice and Fire are split between good and evil. And I think Ice has split long ago.

Good Ice: Old gods, Wall, Starks, Children
Evil Ice: Others

Good Fire: Valyria, Dragons, Thoros
Evil Fire: Melisandre + there is something else out there, I may have missed it or imagining it, but I know it just has to be.

At least that is how I see it. And I am thinking that the good sides will unite against the evil sides.

Also, I always had the impression that the Others have split from the Children. This may have been discussed on the forum though....

Agreed. I think the customary fantasy ending would be devastating and complete cop-out. Fortunately, besides GRRM himself stating "a bittersweet" ending, I just don't believe that will happen.

Worst possible ending? How about R'hollor (apologies to the R'hollor worshippers if I've spelt that wrong) becomes manifest and starts lobbing explosive sneetches at people? Then he gets erased with a pencil.

Gah. I'll get over that eventually.

Heyhey! 900th post. And in the GRRM threads, which is where my centenaries belong :) *

I was considering ending a book series with two words... XD

"Everybody died."

(To make a point about war... Those who live by the sword often die by it).

Why not go one step further and do what this guy did and call your book "John Dies at the End". I think this is without doubt the greatest book title in the history of literature!

I agree Ice too can be good. Ice and Fire MUST combine.

Caught this in re-read of CoK, Robb's crown is made of "bronze and iron, the metals of winter, to fight against the cold." The cold brings the wrights or visa-versa, yes?

I feel that they may need certain conditions to roam, maybe it has to be cold to start with and they feed off the cold making it colder, but they definitely increase the chill level lol

anhalo, Welcome to the GRRM forum. Don't think I've seen you here before.

Yes, GRRM has used a certain Valyrian phrase to this same effect... Valar Morghulis. All men must die.
