Please help-trying to recall a book where the plot was

about a mysterious woman "arriving" on the planet having little memory of her past. As she becomes known to the world, she (I think) professes to be the daughter of God, and the Roman Catholic church gets involved. As I recall, I think it ends up that she is actually an escaped robot (from Isreal perhaps?).

I read it around 2000 and am desperate to find it again. I thought it was by either Arthur C Clarke or Issacc Asminov, but have searched their publications and do not see it there.

Can anyone help? I'd be very greatful.
