May've been asked before, but i was just checking out something george rr martin wrote on his not-a-blog and it struck me how old he is getting.. So what happens if he dies? does he have a wife who he tells all his secret plans to? or a underground laboratory where he stores all his notes in a big wooden chest?

I mean, in the Meanwhile back on the Wall part of AFFC he says hes pretty much done with his next book and hopefully will release it next year.. we all know how that went.. did he spend all that time writing The Mystery Knight and signing books ?

I somehow dont see him living all the way to his final book if he continues at that rate ! maybe thats his plan:eek: wouldnt even be his craziest

.. on a lighter note check this vid on youtube : /watch?v=owf6D2vfZqM

this is how i was after the red wedding and sandors axe meeting the back of aryas head .. i wasnt the only one who thought she was dead right?

Boogz, Mr. Martin got married earlier this year. He has not yet taken a honeymoon... he has stuck to writing for us... and I am grateful. Martin has stated that he does not have notes stashed away with his wife, editor, publisher, or friends. If he passes away before finishing the story, then it will remain unfinished.

Martin was born in 1948... he'll turn sixty-three in September. In comparison, Harper Lee is now eighty-five. Her opus, To Kill A Mockingbird, was published in 1960 and fans are still awaiting the sequel.

Though that would be wonderful to see, if she only ever gives us Mockingbird, it will be enough....

Sorry, back to the topic at hand.

62 isn't old by today's standards. GRRM's problem is he's overwieght.

The bigger question should be, what if I die before George gets to the end of A Song of Ice and Fire? I could be hit with a car any day now. We all face the great unknown each and everyday. The conclusion of a fictional series, no matter how good it is, pales in comparison with that.

Cul and CofK, that's exactly right. We may never know the end, but it's been an awesome ride!

I rather think George's problem is that people are morbidly obsessed with his mortality. I'd feel sorry for the guy, if I wasn't insanely jealous of how much talent he has....
I don't think people are obsessed with his mortality as much as concerned about his weight. Speaking from personal experience (having done Social Work in a nursing home), I can tell you that one of the rarest birds to be spotted is a very overweight man that is over 70 or so. Combine GRRM's age with the ammount of time between books and then look at his age, and it doesn't take any level of obsessiveness to be concerned.

Maybe it's just me, but if the unfortunate where to happen, we'd give a collective tip of the hat, a respectful toss of dirt upon the coffin, offer up a "thanks" and wish him God's Speed.

And I really don't think that's just me :)

Then perhaps we should hope for a Robert Jordan turn of events and wait until the notes are cobbled together into an ending.

When your only competition is a guy who also began a juggernaut multi-volume epic and then died before he could pull it all together and finish, that's kind of a natural thing for people to wonder about...

Christ!!! It's called SEARCH. Do one and find other lame threads on this silly topic.

unfortunately "dies" and "dead" etc. are all 'common search terms and have been omitted from your search' .. this left me with a search for "george martin" which you can imagine doesn't really help ..
if it annoys u so much, why not just ignore it ?

anyway. im praying that he and myself (and you, CofK:D) dont die.. .

Boogs I felt that way too. Just after reading the Red Wedding and Arya getting whacked on the head from the hound, I thought she may have been killed too. I went to work the next day and was upset the whole day.

The link for youtube didnt work, can you post another or PM me? Thanks.:D

thanks TK :)

conor for w/e reason i cant post links so the link is

you wont regret ..

TK-421 is the only person in these entire forums who can get the Search to work. I wish I knew how he does it because it's so terrible that I've simply given up using it. When I need to find a thread I seriously click through this forum one page at a time until I find what I'm looking for. But that would only work with people like me who have been here awhile and who have a good idea about which threads have been posted before.

Anyway, I'll reiterate my own well-worn opinion that I think ADWD will be the last book we ever see. Not because I think he's going to die tomorrow but because I think he's sick of writing this story and dealing with the pressure involved. He has a lot of interests and I think it's apparent that he would rather focus on those other interests. THIS IS NOT A CRITICISM. I chalk it up to human nature. I mean, sometimes we get bored with things and decide to do other things. I used to like programming as a hobby and then I got bored with it and now I'd rather focus on brewing beer and learning the guitar. GRRM would rather focus on (I'm guessing) his marriage, touring conventions, releasing Wildcards collector's editions, and watching football (because, hey, football is awesome).

Let's face it, he *will* die at some point. Just like the rest of us. It is pretty weird to talk about it but I think it will be easier for everyone if we just start to accept that ADWD is the last book we'll se. If we do get another book then it'll feel awesome to be pleasantly surprised by it rather than being all stressed out waiting for it like we were for ADWD.

Christ!!!

Yes?:D

(The response that always irked me when I vainly spouted Christ's name... It usually worked though ;).)

I agree TK. This is yet another lame thread on the same tired old topic. YAAAWN. It is also, really, in rather bad taste. If he dies, he dies. Any of us could get wiped out in the next five minutes by some horrible disaster like what struck Japan earlier this year. I hope GRRM lives to a ripe old age regardless of whether or not he finishes ASoIaF. I also hope Winds of Winter is in my hot little hands by the end of 2012 :)p yeah, right!), and that A Dream of Spring arrives soon after.

But, to answer the question (assuming that you mean "if GRRM dies before finishing ASoIaF?"), as it was literally put:

1. A lot of people, especially his wife and his close family and friends, will be devastated.
2. There will be a funeral, and I hope that it is the size of a comic convention (actually, that would be an appropriate venue).
3. All of his writings, and any other property he owns, becomes the property of his Estate.
4. His Executor (or Estate Trustee, or whatever it is called in the jurisdiction where GRRM dies) becomes the legal owner of all of his assets, subject to the trusts placed upon them by any testamentary document that GRRM had done prior to his death, or the succession/estate laws in the jurisdiction where he dies if there is no will.
5. The Executor works on winding up GRRM's affairs. As part of this, if GRRM has completed substantial writings, the Executor would be at liberty to have them published, unless there is a directive in the Will to have them destroyed (which GRRM has publicly stated). So, unlikely that we will see a posthumous book from GRRM, unless it was already finished or almost finished. It does not appear that a guy like Brandon Sanderson will ride to the rescue of this series if it loses its author.
6. Then, regardless of any posthumous publications, the Estate assets will be distributed in accordance with the will, or if there is no will, in accordance with succession/estate law in the jurisdiction where GRRM dies.
7. Slowly, people will heal after mourning the loss of an exceptional and interesting person whom they loved, and hopefully move on with their lives.

That's it in a nutshell, with a lot of details left out.

Oh, right. We don't get to find out what happens. Boo-flipping-hoo. Get over it.

Really, I wish this stupid question would just go away.
