Epic fantasy series and author mislaid in my memory

I read this series in the early 2000s. There were 2 books written then and I was waiting for the 3rd which the (female) author had not yet written because her Mum got ill or somesuch.

It was about 3 sisters, I think they could do magic, set in a fantasy kingdom where they had to defeat evil peeps and learn to rule together (maybe?). There was a ruined city somewhere in it too. And I think they had to go to study wizardry somewhere. No vampires or ghosts if I remember aright, and not set in this world.

Hmm... Might not be this one at all, but some of your description reminds of the novel Black Trillium co-written by Andre Norton, Marion Zimmer Bradley and Julian May, Three sisters, who could do magic... There were several sequels written by the individual authors and I seem to remember one of them was delayed.

It sounds more like what happened with Melanie Rawn. Her mother was very sick and she (Melanie) stopped writing for a while. The trilogy was The Exiles trilogy and did involve three sisters, but they were opposed to each other.

I'm sad also. The first two books were so good that it seems a shame that there isn't a third book to match.
