I have a friend, Creampuff, who has not yet read AFFC. He's interested in reading AFFC and ADWD together in chronological order. I've read both and I've advised him not to attempt this because at one point there are twenty-two concurrent POVs. I feel this is too much to keep straight... yet he insists.

So I poked around the internet and was surprised to not see a combined, chronologically correct, chapter by chapter combination of AFFC and ADWD already posted.

I've not reread AFFC lately, but here is a first stab at this. The following is only a suggestion, I've not tested it... yet.

SPOILER ALERT for AFFC and ADWD. I will not tell you what happens in these books, but I am going to name some of the chapters by title... and that may provide a spoiler or two. Read at your own risk.

I'm not going to list all the chapters out... that would waste a lot of space. In fact, I think there are a couple of points where the books overlap so I suggest you catch up in both books to that point before you proceed.

After ASOS, I suggest that you read the prologue for ADWD and then alternate chapters until you get to AFFC: Samwell I and ADWD: Jon II. These chapters are two POVs of the same events.

After those two, you can read the next thirty-five chapters of AFFC and the next thirty chapters of ADWD. Go ahead and alternate between books as you feel. This will ensure that you read AFFC: The Cat of the Canals before you get to ADWD: The Blind Girl. This will get you through AFFC: The Princess in the Tower and ADWD: The Prince of Winterfell. Reading those two will ensure that AFFC: The Princess in the Tower comes before ADWD: The Watcher.

At this point you'll only have five chapters of AFFC left. So just alternate between ADWD and AFFC until you finish AFFC. Then just keep on truckin' through ADWD.

If you try this, let us know of any other points where certain chapters must be read first to proceed in an orderly manner.

Thanks Boaz! Will give this a try, was planning to start first reread ADWD today but now i will do it this way because i was frustrated at first with ADWD because of the overlap of things i had already read about in AFFC. It kinda felt like I was getting no where!

Did not read after spoiler warning, but I am a new reader of FFC and wanted to combine it with DWD. Biggest problem is that the PoV's become congested. I would say that it is better to finish off AFFC then start with DWD if you are a new reader.

Tragedy, correct. In the first four books, there are somewhere between eight to a dozen POVs at one time, but if you combine AFFC and ADWD, then you'll have twenty-two POVs overlapping... and that's a quite a bit to keep straight.

It would also be wise to read the following chapters in the order given: ADWD Davos II, AFFC Cersei IV, ADWD Davos III, AFFC Cersei V, ADWD Davos IV.

underredskies, thanks for the help... and Welcome! I knew that Davos timeline and the information coming back to King's Landing would intersect, but I did not delve deeply into Davos' and Cersei's POVs to figure it out. One thing I did not mention in my OP was that I also want to take into account the time differences... there must be time gaps for infomation to travel by boat, rider, and raven. I don't know about the White Harbor and King's Landing information, but I'll be working on it in my reread.

I came online here to specifically check if anyone here was reading AFFC and ADWD in tandem besides me. I read where a couple of my friends elsewhere were doing it, and seeing that I was struggling with AFFC (I was only 500pgs into last week when ADWD was released).
It wasn't so much that I disliked AFFC or even thought it boring, but my little brain kept wandering off in search of Dany and her dragons, Jon and his blasted wall and Tyrion's wittiness. The Dorne stories just weren't keeping me as captivated as I had hoped for.
Soooo, I asked for the recommended reading order and started over this weekend. It's like reading a whole different book. Everything makes sense, it flows and even some of the newer characters POVs (in AFFC) are more interesting to me.

I think all serious fans should do the reread this way. It's fantabulous!!!

There's some odd bits there like Jon chapter 54 being after chapter 61, but for the bits where AFFC/ADWD run together, it looks appropriate

I think the next time I do a re-read, I'm definitely going to try this. Thanks for posting all the details everyone!

Great idea.

***Slightly Spoiler-ish***

I was actually a bit miffed at the beginning of ADWD having to read a POV with Sam still at the wall when he had just spent all the last book traveling away from the wall!

I had this idea to read them at the same time as well. Whenever I do a reread, I think I may just attempt it! Thanks so much for putting this together.

The handy think about eBooks is you can actually use something like Sigil to rebuild the two books into a single book in this order! And give the chapters frikken numbers!

The handy thing about Google is that I can let someone else do all the work. It appears that Sean Collins over at boiledleather.com put his chronological list together last June. The Imp linked something to that site recently... some theory or other.

Whenever I get around to a re-read, I would like to try this. Has anyone tried reading the two books at the same time? What did you think...does it make them better than reading them one after the other?

I'd like to do it. I guess it would be easier if you're reading the ebooks or listening to the audiobooks, keep switching between two books would probably disrupt the reading experience a bit.

I've read the books a few times, and yes I find reading AFFC and ADWD together does help you make connections. Of course, the first time there were a few years that past bye in between the books, so I missed a few things here and there. Instead of chronologically, I recommend parallel story arcs. The first three books work together because they are all trying to figure out who murdered Jon Arryn. AFFC and ADWD have other issues, time and distance just part of it. Try reading the first Cersei chapter in AFFC, then read the first Daenerys chapter in ADWD. Go back and forth, Cersei then Daenerys, just those chapters and you'll see what I mean. Also try just reading only the chapters from a single character and see if that shakes something loose for you.
