I have a strong interest in historical settings as
Having struggled getting images into my Kindle files (and found info on the Amazon DTP site took a while to find) I thought I would share HOW to make sure your images show up on Kindle.

Short guide on how to get images in your kindle book

If you are new to making e-books there are a couple of articles about:
Publishing E-books
Publishing on Kindle
Hope they might be of use.
I talk a bit about the very useful US site Smashwords.

If you are self publishing then getting your head around e-books is essential. If you have a decent book its a good way to get some exposure.

I second the recommendation of Smashwords. I've used it for two of my books. After figuring out how to format the basic electronic copy to fit their guidelines, all I had to do was upload that basic copy, then they transformed it into all the other formats to be read on various platforms such as the iPhone, and they set up distribution on iTunes and other online ebook stores. Smashwords doesn't yet format books for the Kindle; I had to do that myself in a separate process. But that separate process was relatively easy, because all it required was tweaking the basic copy I'd already made for Smashwords. (I don't have images inside my books, so I can't comment on that, but for the Kindle version cover, I just uploaded the cover image, and presto!)

Thank you very much! Publishing on Kindle seems less complicated than I thought.

It's also a great guide to e-publishing in general.

Publishing on Kindle, is this a way to self publish? Does it go through any quality assurance, I mean anyone could do it, but surely there must be some sort of editing process otherwise it could be flooded with junk?

But as a hopeful writer, it does give me other avenues.

NO quality control at all. Beyond some basic check at Amazon that the file itself if OK that is.

This is the whole point of self publishing. ANYONE Can do it. That means YES you will get a huge pile of naff stuff BUT some really good books as well.

My advice to potential author who are looking to SP via Kindle or any other means is get an editor. SP books can be as professional at mainstream but you the author have to make that happen.
