I'm trying to locate a story I read years ago.
A scientist invents a device that when activated will interchange a sphere of space around the device with a sphere of space in some alternate universe or something. The first time, a small polished wooden sphere appears in his lab. Then another time it has a larger field and he himself is transported and finds himself in a spherical space inside the trunk of a large tree. And of course there's a big wooden sphere sitting in his lab.
That's the main part that I can remember. Can anyone help identify this? I think it was in a large sci-fi anthology book that I read it, but I'm not sure.
