Dynamite Comics have announced an adaptation of the George R R Martin novel A Game of Thrones.

Due for release in September the book will adapt the first novel in the series (obviously)

It seems one successful TV show and everyone want s to do their bit!!

Written by George R R Martin and Daniel Abraham (I don't know how much input GRRM has had, he might just be credited as it is HIS story, and I'm not familiar with Abraham at all)

Art is by Tommy Patterson who seems to be quite a talented young artist!

hmmm.
Could be okay. Dynamite are a bit of a mixed bag with their licensed works though. They can come across as a little... cheap.

AGoT Comic Adaptation

Anyone else been keeping track of the progress of this? Some artwork and an interview with Daniel Abraham, who is doing the script, here: http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/61580932.html.

Looks good. The Other is slightly more cartoonish than I would like, but I'm still excited for this. Can't wait to see the Tower of Joy scene finally make it into a visual medium - provided it isn't cut again...

Re: AGoT Comic Adaptation

And here I was thinking I'd been thorough in searching GRRM boards for another thread about it. D'oh!

Well, it's taken quite a while, but at least I have completed the first 10 issues of this series.

Inevitably I guess it has to be compared to the Wheel of Time series being published by the same company. So I'll just briefly say that in the case of both series they are not skimping on the story, they are giving a full adaptation rather than a fast paced edited version. Both series are well written and well drawn, the only difference being GoT seems to have better colouring that sells the artwork that much more.

The other thing is that the writing on WoT takes a few issues to find the balance, whereas GoT lands running.

Although it should not be an indication of which series is the better by which is the better adaptation I think GoT has it just by a whisker. When I started reading WoT it took me while to get into it, but by the time I got up to date I could not put it down, with GoT I was in there with the opening scenes, and I think the reason for this is that the writer on WoT seems determined to get every bnuance in, which means there are far too many text boxes, while GoT tells itself.

All that being said the adaptation is faithful to the original, with clearly drawn characters, that serves as a compliment to the written word, and to the TV series, giving a third, valid interpretation of characters.

It has reminded me of the story and indeed, shown me things I missed on both the television and in reading the books. Some of these are really obvious.

Tyrion remains the best character, although it seems to me that I thought he was a nastier piece of work to start with in the book, but both the series and the comic show otherwise, so it must have been me!

Ahem, he says with a flush of embarrassment. I've had them sitting on my to read pile since the series started....

I really should have read them sooner.

No need to flush, my to read pile is a little intimidating as well!

So far they have done themselves proud, it just depends how many comics they give to each novel.

So far we have had 10, in the case of Wheel of Time they are on issue 30 and still on the first novel, so hopefully we won't be left shortchanged
