Conn Iggulden is very similar and his main inspiration is Gemmell. He writes historical fiction with a Gemmell style hero.
I don't really think it matters as his books tend to stand alone. Even those in series are only loosely connected. The first I read was "Druss: The Legend" and wasn't disappointed.I have not read any Gemmell, where is a good place to start?
Connavar,
Right, I'm set, first book off the rank will be 'Ten Thousand' by Kearney.
Menion, thanks for that, will have a look at Dave Duncan as well.

My wife loves Gemmell (like me) but hated Iggulden.
I'd definitely prefer James Barclay. A guy Gemmell rated highly. Very good for funny, heroic characters, and character interplay.
Coragem.
