Donovan K. Loucks of the H. P. Lovecraft Archive just posted a gallery of all the known photographs of our beloved Grandpa:

In the one labeled "1933?" he looks like he could have been a British character actor. "Pictured is Howard Lovecraft in the role of Minucius Templeton, secretary to Sir James Quist, director of spies in the 1933 film On His Majesty's Secret Service. Lovecraft seems to be a double agent for most of the film, but helps hero Philip Amber (played by Henry Kendall) save the day in the eventful final minutes."

The majority of these I've seen over the years, but there are a number I have not come across before (though I have occasionally seen mention or descriptions of them). Thanks very much for posting the link, Martin... and a BIG thanks to Donovan Loucks for putting them up... and for his fine work on Lovecraft in other respects....

 

[Terrible Old Man]

Extollager: if movie actors bearing a strange resemblance to Lovecarft count for this purpose, may I draw your attention to the following?

That's Julian West, star of Carl Dreyer's exceeedingly bizarre 1932 arthouse classic Vampyr, in which he plays an initially bewildered and strangely passive young man who, after stumbling into an incomprehensibly odd situation for no reason at all, is provided with clues which include an old book full of terrible secrets, as a result of which he eventually manages to become a heroic vampire slayer.

By the way, in real life, he was a half-Jewish Russian aristocrat so incredibly gay that he later became fashion editor for Vogue. I'm not sure how much of this is relevant, but they do look a bit related, no?
