There is one book where the girl early on is forced to raid a witches house, where she steals something of value, and is caught by the witch. The witch implies she could be potentially powerful since she was not affected by the protective magic of the object. Later on she becomes a pirate, and learns some rudimentary magic, where she closes her eyes but can still see the horizon as if her eyes were open. There is also a 2nd book companion which is based on her brother. Both of them are abandoned and homeless.
