The book's title was "The Magician's Ship." I remember it being one of my favorites of the wave of fantasy books that were published in the post Tolkien rush of the '69-'73 time period.

Thanks!

Not quite: The title is The Sorcerer's Ship, and it was by Hannes Bok, who was primarily an artist (his work graced many of the pulps of the 1940s and 1950s, especially Weird Tales), but who also wrote some fiction. Another of his novels was Beyond the Golden Stair, which was reissued as part of the same series (the Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series), and he also completed the unfinished novel by A. Merritt, The Black Wheel, if memory serves....

You are quite welcome. I personally found that one a bit weak in spots, but still well worth reading; I think his Beyond the Golden Stair is a stronger book, but also still having some shaky elements... still, glad to see some interest in both, as I have a fondness for Bok's work, both as writer and artist....
