Having finished Stories of Your Life and Others and the handful of other stories Ted Chiang has written I thought I'd rank them, maybe add a comment or two and see how others rank what they've read of his.

1. Understand
2. Exhalation
3. Hell is the Absence of God
4. Tower of Babylon
5. The Lifecycle of Software Objects
6. Story of Your Life
7. The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate
8. Division By Zero
9. Liking What You See: A Documentary
10. Seventy-Two Letters
11. What's Expected of Us
12. The Evolution of Human Science

The first three were hard to pick but they are the ones I probably think about most often and the first six are some of the best stories I've read written in the last twenty years.

I believe I listened to podcasts of Hell and The Merchant which may have helped me like the former more and may have hurt the latter.

The last two stories listed were extremely short pieces written for Nature's Futures section and are hard to compare to the other more common length short stories.

I've only read "Tower of Babylon" and "Story of Your Life" and I thought both were excellent. I would probably rank "Story of Your Life" above "Tower of Babylon". I really need to get around to reading some more of his work though.

His Exhalations anthology is even better. Especially Anxiety is the Dizziness of Freedom.
