This was book...possibly a short in compilation of stories...read it in the mid to late 80's but I think the story is older.
From what I recall; A project on a spaceship has created a new form of life, very small and very short lifespan, but intelligent. The ship is suffering from some type of malfunction and the life forms recognize this and spend numerous life cycles solving the problem, and coming up with a method to communicate with the humans on the ship. It was a great story, and I am pretty sure both ST TNG and the Simpsons cribbed from this story.
Any help on identifying this story would be great.
