Sheri S Tepper book?

I remember a story very vividly but can't remember what the book was called. I think the author was Sheri S Tepper.

It was about a girl who was being pursued by someone who was using voodoo. She had a cat and she went on a camping trip with her lecturer to a native American camp where they helped her but she also ended up in hospital and the lecturer put something inside a soft toy and the toy guided her in an out of body experience to hunt down the person who was hurting her. It took her to a shed in her family garden and it turned out to be someone who was painting a picture using magic to put a spell on her to try and kill her.

Can anyone help me with a title so I can buy the book again please?
