I recently blogged about this science fiction classic. Has anyone else read the story?

Read it? It's only one of the most debated sci-fi stories. With that said, I enjoyed the SciFi Channel version with Bill Campbell and Poppy Montgomery—especially the way the characters failed even after dumping the cargo and stripping the lander.

I found it a very affecting story. I also suspect that those people who often argue most vehemently against it (scientific innacuracies etc) are the most touched by it of all.

Though I would never expect them to admit it. ;)

I seem to remember that, in the original story, the girl was saved somehow but when Godwin submitted it to Astounding it for publication, Campbell returned it again and again until Godwin submitted a version that was 'true to science'.

I also seem to remember that a story called The Cold Solution was submitted to Analog and published in the '90s. Of course Campbell was long dead by then.

Edit: forgot to say that it was a favourite story of mine in my teens. Thanks for the thread, I missed the discussion the first time around.

Apparently he kept saving the girl with ingenious solutions... : )

I just googled and read it thanks to this thread. I had never heard of it before.

I thought it was pretty decent.
