Has anyone noticed on Amazon (USA) that you can buy the first 4 ASOIAF books for $20? This is pretty tempting, I am almost finished with AGOT but thought, this will save me 54% (I did the calculation :D) of the total cost of getting the box set and I assume even more if I buy them as singles. I know I have book one but it will save me about $10 if I bought them as single Kindle versions and if I want a re-read then I can do so again. What do you guys think? EDIT: Ahhh heck, I bought it anyway now, so I have the first 4, and if I like them then I will get ADWD.

I think you'll like them :)

I actually wish I'd bought ADWD on Kindle. About 95% of what I buy is for the Kindle but there's a few books that I still want to cherish in paper copy. But ... I'd forgotten just how heavy and cumbersome a large hardback can be, and it probably didn't help that I read it in full over one weekend.

Once the price comes down a bit, I'll probably buy it again in Kindle format. (I'm not paying another £12. Ludicrous price for an ebook).

Hope you enjoy, Biodroid! :)

SPOILER

I am at the part where Joffrey ordered Ned Stark's execution in public (Arya's POV). Now I think the fan is going to be hit by the brown stuff. Can't wait to see what happens!!!

END SPOILER

I just finished A Game of Thrones, while I am impressed with the skillful character development and the highly intricate story with it's really sweet twist's I was a bit let down in some places. I admit to liking simpler fantasy with decent world building and swordplay. Still getting used to fantasy with very *cough* little fantasy elements in the story. The ending was very well handled and hope the next few books will be better. Glad to finally be seen as an official convert for AGOT, just need to be a convert for ASOIAF series.

Yeah!! I knew you would be an official convert soon! Don't worry you will get more "fantasy" elements in the next books!

I saw an ad on TV last night, I think it was for Worst Buy (I'll get on my soapbox at the end of this post), that featured the Kindle... and in the last shot the Kindle had A Dance With Dragons on it.

Ten years ago, I shopped quite a bit at Best Buy. In the first year of living in Denver, I spent over a thousand dollars at Best Buy... phone, movies, music, computer components, games, alarm clock, etc... Then I bought a Bruce Lee double feature The Chinese Connection/Fists of Fury, but when I tried to view it the picture was so grainy it looked almost like the static fuzz white noise we used to get when the networks went off the air. So I took the DVD back to Best Buy to exchange it for something else... and I was informed by a blue shirt that Best Buy does not exchange or refund on DVDs or computer games due to the fact that they might have been copied and then returned. I told him that policy made sense, but I told him that the DVD was unwatchable and that no one would ever desire to copy fuzz in order to watch it later. He told me the policy was firm, so I asked to see the manager. The manager arrived and I asked him to please put the DVD into a player and view it to prove my point. He told me that he could not take the DVD back because the policy was set at the corporate level. So I pulled out my phone and called corporate and explained the situation. The lady at corporate told me that each individual store sets it's own return policies. So I told them all they were liars and cowards and that I would never purchase from them again... that all my money would go everywhere else but to Worst Buy.

And the next month, they ran an ad campaign about their generous return policy. Do you remember the commercial about the family going out while leaving their dog at home? The dog was bored so he got on the computer and ordered a ton of movies online from Best Buy.... 101 Dalmations, Benji, Lassie, The Fox and the Hound, Lady and the Tramp, etc... and then the dog opened all the movies and watched them... And when the family got home they laughed and the dad took all the movies back for a refund!

And how much was this Bruce Lee DVD for which Best Buy lost my business? $9.99.

Edit: The bit about Worst Buy was not at the end of the post... it was the post.

Most of the books in my collection are in ebook format. Though occasionally, I will buy the paperback version of a book I really like. I never ever buy hardback, because it is very expensive.

i have officially put an e-reader on my Christmas list! I will always prefer an actual hold in my hands book but I can no longer resist the idea of 10's of 1000's of books at my fingertips, right now!

I returned the Kindle version because the formatting is very poor, I will most likely just get the paperback version. I get really irritated that publishers can't format their ebooks properly.

I've had a Kindle for well over a year now Needle and I would definitely recommend e-readers. Very soon, you don't even notice the difference between them and a real book. The biggest downside is that they aren't so easy to flip through compared to a paper book. You do end up spending more on books as well, because that damned One Click thing that Amazon does is just too easy :) My overloaded book shelves thank me though!

I could not get an ereader and had to read ebooks from my computer because amazon and barnes and noble do not ship their ereaders to my country. Therefore, it is hard to get ereaders here at a reasonable cost.

You have my sympathy Chongjasmine. I think much of problem stems from publishers still having a paper book mindset. I wish they would drag themselves into the 21st century and stop dividing up the world into regions. I'm in the UK and I can buy a paper book from Amazon US and pay the international shipping charges, yet I cannot buy an e-book on the US site because of 'licensing restrictions' (and Amazon won't sell Kindles in places where they don't have license agreements). It's nonsense. On the internet, there are no national boundaries and no shipping costs, and I think if someone wants to give you their money, you should make it easy for them and stop creating artificial barriers. And then they complain about piracy .... sigh.

Sorry, rant over!

The problem is, the more difficult they make it, to get a kindle, or a kindle version of an ebook, the more they drive people away from them. And these 'lost' customers may turn into ebook piracy to satisfy their needs.

I have the epub format e-book and the formatting is fine. I have a Sony reader but since getting an android tablet I do my e-book reading on that. I like the freedom to buy from where ever I wish and then just use whatever reader app is needed. I do seem to find myself more and more in the Kindle app though.
