The difficulties in writing for a YA demographic

LotR is a fine length. War and Peace took too long to get going, though I did get top marks for a book review on it in year 10.

To be fair I wouldn't know if LOtR ever got going I read the first part ... and half of the Hobbit.
 
I was 8 when I read LOTR. We had a reading scheme at school whereby if you read 20 books you got a certificate. I thought this was stupid as people were reading really short books to get certificates and the expectation was I'd do the same. So I went in quite a different direction... I got a certificate for it.
