I used Delerium, Era, Enya and Loreena McKennitt to create the background music to most of my writings.

Listening to Loreena's album 'The Book of Secrets' was pivotal in helping me get into the correct mindset, especially the last song on the album, 'Dante's Prayer'.

Honestly, depending on what the scene is and my mood almost any music will suit - with the only real exception being Rap (though I'm also of the opinion that rap isn't music).

I'd also say that any music with english sung vocals is not to my taste for inspiration, if because the understandable words distract somewhat.

Also you need to check out both Amethesium and Kitaro :)

Classical for my fantasy pieces. Rachmaninoff. Tchaikovsky. I don't really have anything that I listen to for writing horror and science fiction, though in science fiction's case if I'm writing some kind of space conflict I'll listen to some classical. Anything sweeping usually does the trick.

I'm with the others that lyrics in songs can be a bit distracting, but I like to have the ear phones on with music, so that I can dip into it for moments when I'm not focused. Electronica tends to be my weapon of choice - Boards of Canada, Orbital, The Orb, Dead can Dance... They seem to fit SF to my mind.

Music as background? Not for anything that requires using my brain. I'm too much of an active consumer of music.

These days it's mostly music from movie soundtracks. (Although sometimes I do listen to Loreena McKennitt, too.)

For no good reason I can't write my fantasy without certain John Barrowman songs on in the background. Not through choice (I'd have at least picked Bon Jovi) - one of his videos inspired a character, I watched it constantly for over an hour and now I need it playing as I write.

Sick fed up of it but writing doesn't happen if I switch it off.

I find the soundtrack of Tron Legacy useful -- lots of moody instrumentals.

Otherwise, ES Posthumus make some excellent music (including the theme for the TV series Cold Case).

Mostly rustic-sounding music like "Insomnia", "Touch The Sky", and "Under A Violet Moon", but also fast-paced music such as, "Salty Dog", "Kiss With A Fist", and "Rebels Of The Sacred Heart".

P.S: My definition of "rustic" is probably different from yours, seeing as to me, it means tribal or ancient.

really bouncy pop preferably sung by floppy haired teenagers ;) Or, in contrast, super-indie stuff nobody's ever heard of.

I just listen to music all the time though so it's not really specific to my writing.

Magic 105 fm.

I have recently been working on some rewrites and edits, and I find I can work effortlessly to Magic 105fm, 40 minutes of uninterrupted slush, it's my soundtrack as I work from 8 till 1.

Have been known to listen to Queen or Meatloaf when writing action sequences.

When feeling insecure, my only refuge is Changes by Ozzy Osbourne.
