Winds of Winter news -- WARNING: SPOILERS

Re: Winds of Winter news

OOOhHhhH, how can you be so mean!

BRB as soon as I finish! :D

Re: Winds of Winter news

I can't decide if I want to read it or not. Those 4 sample chapters from aDWD kind of killed the beginning of the book for me.

Re: Winds of Winter news

Imp, I didn't actually read any of the DwD chapters either, but then I only started reading the books about 18 months before DwD came out. I couldn't have lasted five years! I suppose if you read a chapter now, then never read it again, it will feel new again whenever the book finally comes out. However, if you don't want to read it, you should look away now ...

Here be spoilers!

Well, mostly my first impressions were pity for Theon. The part where he pours out his story to Asha made me wonder if his mind's more than a little fractured. I don't think he'll ever recover from this ordeal (assuming he even lives of course). The fact that he's still terrified of Ramsay, even to the point of telling Stannis that he mustn't call him a *******, shows just how broken he is.

I also thought it was interesting that Jeyne Pool may be sent to The Wall. Assuming Jon lives, and we're all certain he will, I wonder what will be the fallout from that.

Another little throwaway comment was when Stannis said he had a maester that was like a father to him. Hmmm, wonder if he'll ever find out that Mel killed him.

I need to reread again more slowly tomorrow. It's almost 2am here in the UK. Hurray for the holidays and long lies! :)

Re: Winds of Winter news

SPOILERS!!!!!!

I am glad to see that Theon does indeed live, although for how long remains to be seen, and I too feel pity for him, he is surely, truly broken. I have to wonder about Asha, is she trying to help because he is her brother or simply in hopes of using him for her own means?

Stannis's comment about his father like maester seems out of place after the way he treated him before he died.

I too need to read it again and think some more!

Re: Winds of Winter news

"Tree, tree, tree"

There are so many implications in that chapter that I wouldn't even know where to begin.

But that was sweet, sweet reading.

You got sucked up the chocolate tube?

If you found a skeleton therein it belongs to a hefty German child.

Stannis isn't very cuddly, as we all know. There is no joy or love in anything he does, or in any of his relationships.

I foresee great things happening at that tree!

Re: Winds of Winter news

If he somehow manages to bring it back to Bran, the Godswood, and the Heart Tree in Winterfell....I may fall over from happy giddiness.

I think you should prepare a soft landing spot 'cause I bet that's where we're going! :D

Re: Winds of Winter news

Darn you all to heck. Now what am I going to do until the fat man gets done writing this stupid book.

I like Stannis' attitude about Ramsay coming for him, "He's welcome to try." That's the side of Westeros that I love so much - the homicidal maniacs are dangerous... but so are the good guys, and they know it.

Re: Winds of Winter news

Ramsay is a bad, bad man.

I'm actually surprised that he's let his father live this long.

Stannis is inviting the Devil to come pay him a visit.

Not something you want to do.

All Ramsay has proven to me is that he's incredibly cruel. IMO, hisd cruelty and need to satisfy his sadistic impulses will be his undoing. He doesn't have his father's intelligence, and that won't help him against Stannis eiither.

And then there's the matter of Melisandre

And possibly Bran

Ramsay is screwed IMO

Re: Winds of Winter news

Ramsay gained the name Bolton from Snow.

That isn't easy, Jon wasn't able to earn his family's name.

He knows how to break people, and has no compunction about doing it.

He damned near mentally destroyed a prince of the Iron Born.

There isn't a lord sworn to the Boltons that isn't going to follow his lead if Roose is dead.

Just out of fear.

I'm not sure why you're underestimating Stannis.

What did Ramsay do to "earn" the Bolton name? Beuing able to toruture someone on an ongoing basis, cut off fingers and toes, break teeth, etc doesn't take brains, it just takes a sadist. You're right that the other lords would follow him if Roose was dead, so my guess is that you can add Roose Bolton to the list of people that might want him dead.

Ramsay has enemies he doesn't even know he has.

Re: Winds of Winter news

By virtue of his singular adeptness at cruelty, he made his father give him the family name.

And his pop isn't "Too Fat To Sit On a Horse" Manderly.

There is a ton of conflict between the two set up in ADwD.

He bent Roose, his own father, the previous Lord of Harrenhall, to his will.

The Lords of North aren't going to follow the Boltons, nor Freys, but I'd bet you dollars to donuts that Ramsay is going to kill his father and take the banners that do follow.

Basically it all looks like fortune smiled to Stannis, and GRRM is trying to tell us he is still in the game. Indeed Boltons could just sit their ass at Winterfell and have won the war that way. First of all Stannis found treason of Karkstarks - if he did not, he would be doomed. Second of all Manderly army is on the move - so at least this coming battle looks like predestined to be victorious. I'm not sure if GRRM will allow himself to kill Ramsey so quickly, he's too valuable badass, but it looks like Stanis will regain some strength.
