I read these books back around 1993/1994, they were in my school library.
Plot is basically an ordinary boy who is told of his destiny and travels with (I think two) companions on a perilous quest. One character is possibly of the rugged hardened type.
I remember the illustration on one of the books to be characters walking along a ledge or similar, one holding a torch perhaps. I remember the feel of the stories to be quite dark.
I wish I could remember more, these books have stuck in my mind for all this time I have wished I could find them again
