The female protagonist is a trainee interstellar pilot whose heart has been replaced with a cyclical pump, as evidently pilots are unable to sanely navigate cyberspace unless they have no natural rhythms. There is a cyberpunk element in that she at one point in the novel spends some time sorting through email in an internal implant and there is some talk about spam filters.
There is a male protagonist introduced at some point in the story, who it turns out is the only individual able to navigate hyperspace without having his heart replaced.
At one point there's a bit with a visit to a whale pod, genetically modified people who live with the whales and a vote by a group to "go deeper" and drift further away from the genetic norm.
It's driving me nuts not remembering the title. Any help greatly appreciated.
