reading/writing groups.

The judge might come in and explain better. First participations encouraged you don't have to critique others but most of us find it improves our own practice to. And you don'( have to reach thirty to critique someone elses. The thirty post rule is to discourage people who want to use the board without participating on the chrons. When I got here it was for the critiques. But I got addicted like an awful lot of others ... Slippery slope beware but there is so much more on the site and so much support. Have a work through the general writing thread and you'll see what I mean. Also the writing challenges are good fun. Sorry about wall of texts some isp issues here at mo.

Thanks. I'm not trying to bother anyone with 5 to 10 page posts of my work. I'm already self published. But if I'm required to submit the first 10 pages of my work to be mercilessly picked apart as my 1st volume stuff already has, then I will submit my unpolished edit second volume stuff if thats OK. But I will summarize the first volume of course.

Would rather just post selected scenes from my already published stuff and I can defend my artistic preferences in my sometimes misunderstood writing.

Starchaser, it might help if you read through the Critique forums rules and guidelines which will explain a lot of our thinking http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/527567-please-read-before-posting-rules-and-guidelines-for.html In particular you will see that (a) we don't allow 10 pages of anyone's work and (b) we don't allow any excerpts from already published stuff. But yes, it might get mercilessly picked apart -- that depends on how well you write! :p

We welcome newcomers with open arms here in Aspiring Writers, and we look forward to your contributions to our many threads -- and indeed to the whole of the site. However, we are fully aware that for some members achieving the necessary 30 posts for Critiques is more important than joining in, and as a result they succumb to the temptation of writing short posts in rapid succession. We take a dim view of that, naturally. That kind of thing not only gets a member in the moderators' bad books -- not a place anyone wants to be -- but it does rather irritate those who give freely of their time to critique work, so can be very counter-productive.

So, settle in, get to know us, and become part of the family. And do read through the latest threads in Critiques. Firstly you will see the kind of standard others achieve, so you can measure your own work against it. Secondly, you will see that we don't always treat pieces with kid gloves, as I've mentioned above. Also, as springs says, we encourage those who require a critique to give them -- reciprocity is important here.

Finally, we don't expect -- and we actively discourage -- people defending their artistic preferences. We don't allow arguments in Critiques, and even if you disagree with a comment it's best to thank the critiquer and leave it at that.

Yeah, I found out the hard way that not EVERYONE finds my sense of humor "funny". Anyway, yeah I need my second volume stuff critiqued before I do a final edit.

PS: Oh yeah, I don't argue unless I get the "you suck and I'm not stupid enough to read what you have written" critique. LOL

pft!! as if anyone would give that kind of critique here.

no, what you will find here is something of a cross between a cozy corner library where the long standing and rotating book clubs meet for tea and chatter, and a home for the incurably curious, with a smattering of heaven liberally sprinkled throughout.

I wont speak for others (and fully expect to be kind-heatedly teased for it) but this is where I come for a dose of sanity, and an escape of serenity (this being the whole forum not just this thread or section). As such its a place whose sanctity (such as it is) I would defend to my last breath. (sorry if that comes off as hostile I just woke up from an odd nap [see my next blog instillation if that's not sufficient explanation] and am regaining my balance. i'm not saying I feel that you threaten my peace of mind, just putting in my two cents about why I agree with The Judge about where some attittudes can come from [I am rambling without making as much sense as I want so i'm ending this overly long aside])

I would second springs and The Judges suggestions of checking out the critiques section and if that doesnt fit with what you are after, head down to Discussions and join in the conversations there.

*smirky laugh* yes well it should say something about my environs shouldn't it?

back on track: I forgot to mention in my hat throwing that I dont have much in the works right now so if someone wants my aforementioned help without the "burden" of immediate reciprocation... I think I have now clarified my favorable position for that.... if not I'm up too late stressing about tomorrow.

I would tease, Hope, only I'd be a hypocrite if I did. This place helps keep me close to sanity. You all seem such normal, rounded people. Perhaps that says something about me:p.

My turn!

Anyone fancy a swap? I have a 90,000 word YA fantasy thingie, absolutely packed with sad-eyed kittens (*) that I'd really like comments on. Mainly at the level of plot and character, but, you know, sentence-level-catastrophe comments would be fine too.

I'd be happy to reciprocate. I'm generally okay on things like grammar and spelling (but dodgy on comma splices, as we know).

ps: if you're not sure -- and I admit my writing style may not please everyone -- I can send you a chapter to look at. I won't be devestated if you conclude it's not for you once you've seen it :)

(*) not really

nothing to send back at you but you can pm me for my email (i forget if i hid it, if i didnt dont pm me just email it, or do pm me to tell me you emailed, or... there are lots of options i guess i'll stop trying to list them)
I would love something to do when I cant be putting my room together, or job hunting, or all the other trillions of things I need to be doing that there seems to be only a 20 minuet window in my day to do so i'm averaging about 1/2 a thing a day, with lots of time left over.
