(Probably Found) Looking for title and author

Is there anyone out there who may know of an old YA sf book that I read back in the 70's with the main character called 'Varina'? I remember she was being chased by someone that was either a warlord, hunter or just someone in authority. She had companions with her that were either animals or robots or maybe both. I've tried for years to find out but with no luck. This story was the first sf type book I ever read and I'd like to reconnect. I was no more than 8 or 9 when I read this so it was written before 1975 or so.

It's not an exact match, but is there any chance it might be The Delikon by H M Hoover (1977)? I know that date's slightly off for you, but I thought it might be worth a shot. Anything else that you can remember?
