Forge of Darkness - Kharkanas Trilogy

So many authors just vanish off the face of the earth when they finish an epic series like Steven Erikson has, I'm very happy that he is still writing books in the Malazan world. Will be looking forward to this one.

The story concept should be very interesting, Anomander Rake was always one of my favourite characters.

Huh. I've just got an e-mail from Amazon about this, and was looking forward to being the first to post about it. Apparently, I completely missed Bugg's post. Sorry, Bugg!

The date for the Kindle edition is still August 2nd, but Amazon has the hardcover down for a July 31st release!

Can't say I'm that keen on the cover art, particularly after the wonderful Book of the Fallen arts:

Either way, it's nice to see that Erikson is still pumping out a new book each year. :)

I didn't even realize that these would be coming so quickly after he finished with MBotF. I haven't even read Esslemont's books yet, but it's very good to see that Erikson isn't resting on his laurels. I can't wait to read more about Anomander Rake.

Hardcover (and now Kindle) is listed at 31st July still, and we've got a UK cover!

I must say that I prefer this to the US version.

EDIT: Looking on the Tor pages, this was apparently announced on July 3rd. Either way, got my order in. :)

EDIT2: Huh. Amazon has Esslemont's next on the page as a buy-three-for-so-much offer, with an expected date of November this year. Wouldn't that be something? Three Malazan novels in one year! :p

If anyone is interested (particularly those across the pond, with a later release date), thTor are posting the first five chapters in the book, with one each Thursday until the American release.

The first, along with the prelude, is here:

I'm going to wait, seeing as my copy should arrive in about a week, but I hope someone enjoys it!

blimey - more stuff to add to the never-ending mountain of books-not-read...haven't even got up to Crippled God yet...

It descended upon my Kindle overnight :D

I'm sorry to say that I found Forge of Darkness disappointing. There are still the occasional flashes of Erikson's brilliance, but there seemed to me to be less of them this time, and there were too many characters I didn't care about.

Still, there's obviously a lot of groundwork going on, so hopefully it will pay-off in the next two books. At the moment, though, I can't see myself re-reading this one - and that's the first time I've thought that about one of his novels.

Good not finished yet but it isn't pulling at my emotions the way the Malazan did, not as much humour either. Although aren't Envy, Spite and their little sister Malice the most delightful children ever.

I don't think I've ever taken so long to read a book (even if it is a Malazan book)! Started it a couple of weeks after it was released, and finally finished it about a week ago - so that's, what, four months?

Boy, was it a tough slog! The end was good, and the chapter where Envy, Malice, and Spite went crazy was fun (chapter sixteen?), but other than that it seemed to be page after page after page of ruminating...

All that said, I'm willing to give Erikson the benefit of the doubt - he did great things with the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, and the first book in a trilogy is often a long haul of setups and little action.
