Gods Having Wars Among the Stars

I read this book when I was much younger....the story was split among two storylines: human and "gods".

The human side had just landed on a new planet for colonization. Everything was going great for a few years, and then thing started to get really cold, and all I remember is that this one guy had to mine for worms in fertilizer. I know a lot more happened, including the miner guy getting invited to a "main ship" where he met a very tall and thin woman. She had evolved to be very thin, due to never being in gravity. That's about all I can recollect for the human side.

The "god" side involved a few gods playing within the stars, and they were able to control entire star systems at their whim, including sending stars into motion or making stars go supernova. The "gods" were warring with each other, and would explode stars where it was suspected that another god was playing. One god set a star system into motion near the speed of light (causing the system to go cold, intertwining with the human story), and after all stars had gone out, he came across this long-forgotten star, and reveled in the warmth and fun that the star system could provide.

I remember really liking this story, and, after typing it out, it seems kind of silly. But if anybody knows what it might be, I'd certainly like to re-read this story from my youth.

I don't think it would have been Lord of Light as it doesn't really match the miner/fertiliser bit also there wasn't any tall thin woman from low gravity in space. The "Gods" in Lord of Light lived on the planet and weren't wandering the universe or causing supernovas. So I suspect it must have been something else.

I've also been looking for this book since I read it as a child. I remember it was about a colony and the main character kept leaping through time via suspended animation when he kept having too escape various situations. I also remember the gods battling in the stars and the thin woman at the end (she was tall and thin because she lived in microgravity orbiting the colony's planet).

The only clue I have had was a vague memory of picking up Orson Scott Card's "Songmaster" straight after; so it is possible it might be one of his or an author whose last name began at the beginning of the alphabet.

If anyone knows I would love to read this again

Can I suggest "The World At the End of Time" by Fred Pohl? Not all the details match, but enough (the star being accelerated up to relativistic speeds so it outlasts this cycle of creation, in particular) to make it a contender.

Bingo!!! Thanks for that :)

edit: I would've sent a PM, but I don't have enough posts yet! Blast the message board Gods!
