Fantasy world - multiple authors

I hope someone can help me as I have been looking for this for a very long time. In the early 1980s I cam across a book of short stories that was written by several different authors, all based around a fantasy city that was designed as a background for works like this.

I can remember little more about it, except that it also had a fantasy board game based on the same world. There may well have been more than one book published but I don't remember any others.

Any suggestions are more than welcome. I just wish I had taken more care of this book when I had it

I believe that Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman did a lot of work with gaming and collaborative worlds around their Dragonlance works and D&D in general. Possibility?

Sounds like the Thieves World series, edited by Robert Lynn Asprin.

There were twelve volumes, starting 1978. and a game.

I also think that it sounds like the Thieves World series, which is based around the city of Sanctuary.
Was Tempus and his Stepsons mercenaries in any of the stories you remember?
