The Winds of Winter publishing date guesses?

the last good moment (aside from the visuals) came from what GRRM told them --> HODOR. I don't think the story itself is a problem. But the adaptation of the story. As soon as the books didn't spell it out completely, D&D were out of their debt. Like if you check Daenaerys story, she always sounds like a megalomaniac. So her fall from grace isn't so weird. What was bad was Jon Snow story who i think is going to be the real hero against the Night King in the books was usurped by the writers of the show for feminist movement and Arya shock (as per their video youtube comment). Add Bran whose role seems to be merlin to Jon's arthur suddenly being tranformed out of nowhere to be king cause what else where they going to do with him after they changed Night King story. Jon Snow exile cause of some minor character.... all that seemed bogus.

The Epic battle by Candlelight pretty much did it for me.

I see George's latest blog briefly says he it is stressed at the typewriter.

Maybe a knot he is struggling to undo.

If someone else ever got hold of some of his chapter drafts they could probably put together a completely different book version with all the rewrites that may be going on.

George's latest blog shows there is still a long way to go!
He wrote hundreds of page of WOW in 2020, in his best year yet on it. But has hundreds of pages left. So we wont be seeing it this year.
Excerpt below:

What was good about 2020? Besides the election?
Well… for me… there was work.
I wrote hundreds and hundreds of pages of THE WINDS OF WINTER in 2020. The best year I’ve had on WOW since I began it. Why? I don’t know. Maybe the isolation. Or maybe I just got on a roll. Sometimes I do get on a roll.
I need to keep rolling, though. I still have hundreds of more pages to write to bring the novel to a satisfactory conclusion.
That’s what 2021 is for, I hope.
I will make no predictions on when I will finish. Every time I do, assholes on the internet take that as a “promise,” and then wait eagerly to crucify me when I miss the deadline. All I will say is that I am hopeful.
I have a zillion other things to do as well, though. My plate is full to overflowing. Every time I wrap up one thing, three more things land on me. Monkeys on my back, aye, aye, I’ve sung that song before. So many monkeys. And Kong.

Perhaps I may the staunchest of GRRM supporters over the years.... but these words put me at a loss...

I have no idea where GRRM is in TWOW. I know I want it. But I also know that I have enjoyed the series immensely and will take whatever GRRM publishes. I've enjoyed the journey. I've enjoyed the characters. I avoided the last two seasons of HBO's series... and all related spoilers. (Having come this far... and having successfully avoided the spoilers for the last season of The Sopranos for over a decade... I will hold on to my hope for TWOW. Although, I admit that I check the Not A Blog once a month.)

I've kinda got the point where I feel rather sorry for him, that he has to write these very long and complex novels that he probably doesn't want to bother with anymore. That must be so hard. He enjoys editing the Wild Card books and would probably enjoy writing standalone SF and fantasy much more. As it happens, I would much rather he wrote other things too. More to my taste anyway. He seems hemmed in by the necessity of finishing something he's perhaps out-lived his love for. He will be defined as the guy who didn't finish a fantasy epic, when he should be defined as being the great writer who gave us Song for Lya, Sandkings and Tuff Voyaging.

and all related spoilers.
So you didn't hear that Buffy, Captain Archer, General Samantha Carter, SpongeBob SquarePants and, most importantly of all, The Fonz riding on a sleek grey cartilaginous fish, saved Westeros (the fish-borne character being why the ending of the series was so rapturously received).

Ursa that was cruel, well least you didn't tell him about Scooby Doo and Shaggy becoming joint rulers.

<sticks fingers in ears>

La la la la la la la la la.... I can't hear you.

Ooops.

<pulls fingers out of ears and puts hands over eyes>

La la la la la la la la la la la la... I can't read your post.

man, i just realized i joined this board almost 15 years ago. and i think i have read only 2 new books since then. Definitely didn't expect this series to become such a slow burn.

I found it amusing that George blogged this month that he is way behind on his notablogging, but better late than never..

It must be difficult for a writer t keep up the momentum of a huge series and also, not to be seduced by the TV companies for huge sums
of cash. I know I would struggle with that. :giggle:

When the new book is released - presumably with a different storyline/ending to the original tv series - there is a good argument for HBO to go back and produce an 'alternate' tv series for the last 2-3 seasons. There would certainly be massive demand for it.

Because I had read all the available books of the series before the TV series, I would not watch the TV series.
Of course, friends told me about it and it was so different from the books, I was glad I hadn't watched it.
I heard about the TV ending and I couldn't understand why everyone was surprised by it.
Daenerys was mad, all of the Targaryens were mad.

I think the issue is that the tv series deviates so much once it goes beyond were Martin has written up to. Most of the early series are brilliant, follow the books relatively closely and even add extra dimensions to the characters. Once you have seen Tyrion, The Hound, Joffrey etc in the flesh, it's hard to envision them as anything else when reading the books.

The problem is that the early series with their interesting characters and intelligent plotlines disintergrate into non-sensical CGI filled battle scenes for the last 2.5 seasons of the show, which do their best to contradict much of what we knew to that point.

If you haven't seen the tv series, I would definitely recommend you do, at least up to the end of season 4.

I would not recommend the tv series, unless for the visuals. the story of the last 2-3 yeas is abysmal. and makes you think less of asoiaf.
