The Winds of Winter publishing date guesses?

We shouldn't be too hard on GRRM - I mean, it took JRRT 17 years to write The Lord of the Rings and get it published.
And where's his incentive? If he doesn't change what happened in the final series of the TV, people would accuse him of just taking the easy way out, and if he does change it, that opens a completely new can of worms. I doubt whether HBO would be impressed, either. Lose/lose...

I don't think it matters how long it takes to write, but how long it takes to publish. 'Fellowship' was on sale in 1954, 'Return of the King' in 1955.

Now if Tolkien had decided to publish the first instalment in 1954, then withheld the ending for 20 or more years, people would have had something to say. And if, in that intervening period, he had decided to publish lots of other Middle-earth inspired books - and not the one that everyone was so desparate to read - words may have been exchanged.

Quinn the GM gives forty percent chance of Winds on December 17.

Quinn the GM

It is not mentioned in this video, but I was wondering if Martin may be writing two books at once. This whole process is painful for him, I imagine. Could he be finishing both books, the winds of winter, and a dream of spring at the same time?

Also in GRRM’s last blog post, he says a Nymeria show could be in the works.

Isn't that what they said about Feast for Crows and Dance with Dragons? And then there was a six-year gap between them.

Incoming announcement that he was in fact writing both books at the same time, and then realised that they both were actually two books each, meaning he needs to write four books, but because of that a lot of the content of the tWoW need to be revised and rewritten to fit the new content in the final three books - but don't worry, because so much of those are written he is confident they'll all be published back-to-back. Eventually.

@Bick You know, upon thinking about it, someone else probably already suggested this in the previous forty-one pages.

So I have seen three different youtube videos of people projecting the announcement of The Winds of Winter in the next eight months. Apparently, people are regauging their estimates based upon the report of an unnamed popular New Mexico author ordering a dragon cake for an upcoming announcement party.

Someone should do a tarot reading for this prediction.

Dragon cake could be something like season 3 of House of the Dragon announcement.

It will be bundled with Half Life 3. - The greatest game never made................

'I've done it, I've finally finished...' [dramatic pause] '...Fire and Blood 2: Even More Fire And Blood, a comprehensive history of all the Targaryens that were only briefly mentioned in the first book.'

George’s July 11 blog is interesting about dragons and having two legs. Also that how and why they are linked to people will be expanded in WoW and ADOS.
A few days earlier he also mentions his upcoming EU trip and how Worldcon Glasgow ignored his requests to organize some events, which seems strange. He is still keeping busy for sure!

Not just strange - outright rude and offensive, I'd say. From his blog:

"I am not on any programming. It is not for lack of trying, though. I wrote the con’s programming chair back in January, and again in February, asking for his phone number so we could discuss the details. No phone number was forthcoming, alas, just a form letter with a link to an application and a warning that while I was welcome to apply, I could not be guaranteed a place on the programme.

I did not give up there, however. Several months later, when I learned how many of my Wild Cards writers would be at the con (about a dozen, all told), I wrote again and offered to organize a Wild Cards event for them... I got no reply to that one. A month or so after that, I tried again. Howard Waldrop died in January, and I thought it would be nice to do a memorial panel honoring the man and his work. Several other friends of Howard will also be at Glasgow, and said they would be delighted to be part of such a panel. Alas, no reply to that one either."

Appalling, really.

We should see this book around the end of this century.

From the July 11 post on George's Not A Blog...

but I wanted my dragons to be as real and believable as such a creature could ever be. I designed my dragons with a lot of care. They fly and breathe fire, yes, those traits seemed essential to me. They have two legs (not four, never four) and two wings.

I'm glad George included dragons in the story. But he wants me to believe they are as scientifically accurate as possible while breathing fire and being ten times as large as any flying creature in the fossil record... I think we just need to enjoy the story.

Also, a critique of current fantasy.... people want world building with explained magic systems, scientifically accurate mythical creatures, and believable international economic structures for imagined nations. I don't agree with this approach.... I suspend my disbelief the moment I open the book. It's difficult to have a conversation between literalists and those who have suspended disbelief...

A mathematician took some time and
for predicting the publishing date.
