A Song of Ice and Fire currently consists of five books, none of them short. A common reaction to reading one of these books is to want to discuss them. The trouble is that most of the story lines continue through most or all of the books, and so discussions tend to involve information found throughout the series. This means that those who've read only partway through ASoIaF can only join in at the expense of seeing lots of spoilers, thereby robbing themselves of much of the enjoyment when they read the later books: GRRM's planned surprises have become no such thing.
To try to provide a solution to this, this GRRM forum is proud to present a set of book-based threads where information therein is only found in that book and (where appropriate), its predecessors, i.e. the A Game of Thrones thread
only contains stuff from that book; the A Clash of Kings thread only contains information from that book and from A Game of Thrones.
Obviously, this will only work if the posters to these threads are careful about what they post. While we'll do what we can to remove spoilers, this will only possible if the number of spoilers is limited and if those that do get posted are reported quickly.
