I read a story when I was in High School that was part of a compilation that included The Time Machine.

Included in the volume was a story about a man (maybe a scientist) that sent something (maybe a pocket watch) back to the past for a couple minutes and when it returned it was really old and rusty.

The man himself later went back in time with the intentions of it only being for a short time. He ended up being stuck there for several years and become somewhat of a caveman. I tend to remember there was another male caveman that may have befriended him and also maybe that he fell in love with a female cave-woman.

In the end the man somehow returned to his original time realizing in that timeline he was actually gone for only the short time he intended.

I wish I had characters names or something more to go on but, unfortunately, I do not. I've been searching for the name of this story for years. If anyone can help I'd be immensely grateful.

Can't remember a watch in it but it might be No Enemy But Time by Michael Bishop. I do remember that he falls in love with a prehistoric woman in this one.

I wish that was it but, it's not. I think the story is much older. I want to say it took place in London but, I'm not positive.

Michael Moorcock Behold the Man ???

Spoilers if you have not read it. Not exactly a cave man, and no cave woman, but he does meet Mary. He does die in the past, though if a time traveller dies in the past, he is violently thrust back to the future.

Please don't bump threads any more. We treat it as spamming. If we don't know the answer then sadly, we don't know the answer.

You're talking about H. G. Wells' story? That's a big one -- I don't think there were that many collections that would have included it. You might look through the collections that contain it at

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?25149

and see if any of the titles ring a bell. For example, there's a collection called "Travelers in Time" that seems to have the right theme to include both of those stories.
