I read this book at least twenty years ago. I remember that Azazel helped the narrator, but his plans always went wrong in one way or another. There was a bit of a P.G. Wodehouse feel to it, IIRC. What I can't remember is whether Azazel actually was a trickster god type person. I think he tried his best to properly help, so I suspect that, technically, he wasn't.
It's been a while since I read the Azazel stories, but from what I recall he was eager to help only he did things in a literal fashion which often had unintended consequences.
