This novel has a few characters who have the power to cloud the minds of others. I recall asking this forum for help finding information about A DREAM CREATURE that likewise projected its victims most desired objects onto itself, thus luring them to their deaths. Anyway the Lotharians' sole defense lay in their ability to create illusions, so real to the minds of their enemies, that their illusory archers' illusory hail of arrows actually killed them. I had minored in psychology, & also read about THE PLACEBO EFFECT. Though it seems absurd, there are reports of shamans & witch doctors actually frightening people to death, simply by their fears that these men can will them to die.
Anyway, as I read this story, I thought of the classic STAR TREK's episode CATSPAW, & the two beings Sylvia & Korob, whose powers of illusion were their only tool & weapon. Likewise, the pilot had the large-skulled bald guys whose powers of illusion were such, that even after C. Pike became aware that nothing was real, in his adventures there, he still became lost in the realism of it all.
