Astronauts looking at alien sphinx

I am trying to remember the title and author of a sci-fi book from the 80's or perhaps 90's. The cover art was of futuristic astronauts on an alien world, inspecting an alien statue. The statue was I believe made of blue stone or crystal. The text on the back mentioned a mystery of trying to determine who/what left these statues on many worlds. Any ideas?
