Which edition of Close Encounters should I watch?

I haven't seen it. My options are original theatrical, special edition, and director's cut.

I sometimes get confused as to which is which, but I think the director's cut is the one that takes the good from the SE but pares down its excesses. so yeah, that one would get my vote.

As NF says above, the director's cut is the preferred option as it is snappier and loses excess flab.

SS said that the theatrical was unfinished so when he later approached the studio for more money to finish it, they demanded the needless ending.

If the choice were mine to make, I'd watch the original version first, then the reeditted edtion. That way I could judge which I perfer best.

But for Close Encounters of the Third Kind, I like both versions.
